I picked one up a couple of weeks ago. It definitely is badass. The current build quality is head and shoulders above what it was. I'm not exactly sure what's going on with the manufacturing, but I think the Magus folks are building them to their own specs now.

Thank you for rescuing this thread from those gawdamn hijackers

What amp / amps are using UA with ?

1987x. I'd just about given up on ever using it to its full potential.

I'm sold...this is a seriously badass little piece of gear....I got a chance to play one a few weeks back with a 50 watt Marshall JMP head and it worked awesome...got me thinking

It's accepted that Todd Duane is a monster already, but here's a few clips with him using it that I'm guessing people will like...

I've owned a couple of Hot Plates and never had one in the same room with a UA to compare. I think the Hot Plate is great but my biggest gripe is the preset clicks of reduction. The UA works with a smooth reduction (much like the BadCat leash...)

Overall the comments (and my admitted brief encounter) point to less tone suck with UA's compard to other units. Expensive though.....There's one particular well known gear freak on the Les Paul Forum swearing this is the greatest invention ever.

Steve, I owned one of the first UA's and while it sounded great, it looked like some mad amateur scientist put it together (inside and outside)! I couldn't trust it so I ended up selling it at a big loss.

Hey Mark -

I've heard the same thing, and the one I had a chance to play with was an older version and looked sort of sketchy too, kind of like a Kalihi Meth Head electronics project   The new versions are supposed to be way better but I still think they look pretty much amatuer hour on the outside for what they cost. THD destroys in the aesthetics and durable looking , confidence inspiring dept. I don't know why they cant make theirs with a variable control

For the price I think you would be better off using some type of load box (even a hot plate) and running it through a good ss power amp.

What you've described is basically exactly what the UA is...there's a SS amp within.

Exactly, I think you could get a better power amp and load box that was built very well for that cash and have more options.

It's tough to tell what's happening if you ask me. Clearly the volume is lower than without the UA, but I can't tell what's being done with EQ. With most attenuators you lose high end with a lot of attenuation, so you have to adjust.

I'd like to hear the difference between UA engaged and bypassed before passing judgement.

Yeah exactly! I haven't seen the new ones, mine had the cut out plexi front that was cut so badly, it looked like my daughter cut it out for them. There was a loose screw inside too. I won't mention the outlet cord that burnt too. I went back to THD and haven't gone back to any other attenuator. If Mark and Ho have fixed it up nicely, I wouldn't mind buying another UA though because it did sound great!
