Well I just tried a different delay pedal into the Marshall VM, A Boss DD-3. I get the same noise I got with the Magic Stomp. The niose I'm hearing is... well next time you have your guitar plugged in try blowing on the pickups. This is basically the niose I hear. I'm thinking even at the -10dB setting on the loop the pedal is still getting overdriven. This is terrible because I've really grown to like the tone of the VM.

Not sure this is something you want to do but have you thought of putting an EQ in front of the delay and dropping the level a bit?

Never thought of that. How about a noise gate? Would that work?

I guess it would work when you weren't playing anything, but I'd still try the EQ first. My reasoning being that your loop is overdriving the delay pedal so if you back the level of the signal off a bit it won't hit the pedal so hard. Maybe a volume pedal 3/4 of the way open would work?

You could have a tech make up a special cable with resistors to drop the level a bit. My friend had to do that to use a DD3 with his Shiva.

I had the same problem with my 6505, which is weird because they say these amps are made for using pedals in the loop. My DD-3 didn't like the level in the loop at all, so now she sits and gathers dust.

It's an amp without a pre-PI master. You're going to be having this problem a lot.

You might try that pedal that Vlad had in front of his plexi and use it in front instead of in the loop. I've never had that work for me, but it worked for him, and I didn't have that pedal, so maybe it would work for you.

Try it in front of the amp, after the sd-1 or any other boost pedals. Just for shits and giggles. On the delay, leave the delay time where you like it, set the level way down, set the feedback to where you get one or two repeats, tops. Then gradually bring up the level until you get the amount of echo that you like. See if you like how it sounds. It sounds different than a loop, obviously, but will hopefully at least do away with the noise problem. Whether or not you like how it sounds, you'll just have to see...

Will a volume pedal in the loop help?

I'm gonna jump on the "put it in front of the amp" bandwagon. I don't like Marshall's loops in general. Every one I've owned I run the stuff in front. I personally think putting a volume pedal in the loop would kill more tone than having the delay out front.

Vlad the bastard uses a DD-20, and gets darn good results out of it, you may want to try it...musicians friend has a good return policy I hear, as long as they're not shifting warehouses for the third time in a month or something. :D ;)

Try making one of these cables that pads down the level...its super easy. You just might have to play with the resistor values alittle bit. Delay sounds like shit in front of a distorted amp.

I agree, I've never heard a delay sound good in front of distortion, but Vlad had a clip and it sounded really good. I think the trick is to have the repeats with the high end rolled off (I think analog/tape delays do this normally, but digitals don't), maybe that delay (dd20) has a setting like that.

Tried it out Mike and it made things messy. I know I said if the if I couldn't get the loop to sound good I would part with it but you know what... I don't think I'm going to. I'm liking the tone that much.

Hey Brother, if you don't part with it just put away a few bucks every paycheck until you can afford a cheap poweramp and attenuator. I guarantee that if you put asside some money that you will have the cash in no time.

I've had a Stiletto Ace ordered shortly after bringing this home. It may not show up for awhile. Problem is I've really grown to dig the tone of the VM. But I'm putting so much effort into making it work for me, I might as well go back to Boogie. Their amps have quality loops, a dedicated clean and... well you know how I feel about the lead tones. Don't even get me started on the feel, sustain and harmonics. Still that Marshall does sound great. I'm just trying to hard to make it work for me and it's killing the fun of playing. Truth be told I've been wayyyyyyy out of practice since I parted with the Mk IV. I dug the JVM but the Boogie feel keeps me playing and practicing more than other amps it seems. With that in mind, for the sake of my chops, maybe I ought to just return to Boogie and get good at playing. Right now I blow and it's because the fun just isn't there.
