I've really been digging the alien love secrets tone lately, but I can't afford an XTC. However, if things go well I'll have enough cash for a Tourmaster or ghetto 1 module rack setup by summer. Anyone have some clips to fuel my gas? I know Vai used a TOL-100 at some point...

You can get closest to XTC with probably EG5. EG3/4 or SL2 could work too. Vai's base tone was always pretty much modded Marshall. So much of Vai is in his hands. I mean Passion and Warfare was a JCM900 I think, and that sounded great too even though its a terrible amp.

This clip is Vai-ish and it's all IE-4.

I think Vai could pretty much make a turd sound... like Vai.

+1. Like i said, he already has with a JCM 900. :D

Having not tried the EG5 (though I'm planning on sending my MHG in to have it converted), I will say that the EG3/4 dishes up pretty close lead tones for tunes on the Passion & Warfare album...

I wouldn't even know... the last Marshall I played on was a JCM 800 over 10 years ago. :D

According to Vai, he uses his legacy alot during recording , among combining other amps too. This, is at least what he says...

This is the first time I've ever heard this. I've always heard people say he used a heavily modded 800

I think I remember reading about the 900s on the jemsite forums years ago, but Im not 100% sure. The wiki page for Passion and Warfare says so too, but that is obviously not official:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passion_and_Warfare

The gear used to record this album was: Ibanez JEM and Universe guitars, Charvel Greenie Meanie, Marshall JCM900 amplifiers, Boss DS-1 pedals, ADA-MP-1 preamp, Eventide H3000 harmonizer, Lexicon etc.

IIRC there's 800s in the music videos, and I wouldn't trust wikipedia. If you look up the 900s it says they're tremendously popular and heralded among guitar players as tone machines

These are rig pics from the year PAW was released, can't really tell what they are

^He didn't use the marshalls power sections, according to his site he used the preamps into mesa power amps

I'll check tonight... I remember either the PAW CD liner notes or tablature book had a full breakdown of the gear used... off the top of my head I can't remember if it was an 800 or 900 but only that it was heavily modded.

They look a lot like Egnater Amp Building Seminar heads. Maybe Steve went to 4 different seminars and built 4 heads before recording the album.   ;)

he upgraded from a bogner to the tol 100, and i felt he took a bunch of ideas from eggie tone and tried to reproduce them in the legacy, and failed!

i still say the best tones he recorded were blue powder, which was a carvin amp, and bad horsie rhythm tone, which was bogner. i don't think he recorded anything during the tol period. too bad.

I think he may have used them on the Alcatraz album. I know he had a TOL on stage with him when they toured, I saw it.

the pics you posted look like Superleads to me .I dont think that the 800 or 900 came in that headshell .

He used a Bogner XTC , the Egnater MICA at around the same time .

He did have JCM900's on the DLR skyscraper tour, again they were quite possibly modded
