Hello Guys analysing the high quality pictures of the amps used in the 1978 tour in japan,
You can clearly see that the choke used by the main amp isn't a c1999 choke. Why is this important ? between a 3h and 5h choke there is quite a huge tonal and feel gap.
This means that it was changed after the japanese Tour.
For those who didn't know Eddie's choke was never stock old 12'000 series come with c1999 paper version and no metal bell covers. In Van halen 2 recording session you can clearly see a c1999 with metal bells those came out around 69 until around 73 if i remember correctly.

The amp on the right has a c1999 with the metallic bells.
It's a little bit difficult to see on the scans but on the original picture it's a little bit better. It seems that there is no metal gap on the top border of the choke. It seems to be completely flat on the top. We can see on the back on the amps that many of these amplifiers use 5h chokes. However their metal bell color doesn't seem to match and there seems to be an unusual curve on the bell of the choke (could be an optical illusion effect). This could be a 5h marshall choke or a unknown one... However it doesn't seem to be a c1999 this means that the choke was then changed a second time.
another interesting fact we can see that the OT transformer is smaller during the 78 tour which means the OT was probably stock and then changed later during the vh2 sessions to the 1202-132 as people noted back then in the metro forums.
However for the choke, who knows what josé did put there...
