Van halen 1 choke wasn't a c1999 choke

Hello Guys analysing the high quality pictures of the amps used in the 1978 tour in japan,

You can clearly see that the choke used by the main amp isn't a c1999 choke. Why is this important ? between a 3h and 5h choke there is quite a huge tonal and feel gap.

This means that it was changed after the japanese Tour.

For those who didn't know Eddie's choke was never stock old 12'000 series come with c1999 paper version and no metal bell covers. In Van halen 2 recording session you can clearly see a c1999 with metal bells those came out around 69 until around 73 if i remember correctly.

Original stock c1999 choke on a 12000 series :

The amp on the right has a c1999 with the metallic bells.

It's a little bit difficult to see on the scans but on the original picture it's a little bit better. It seems that there is no metal gap on the top border of the choke. It seems to be completely flat on the top. We can see on the back on the amps that many of these amplifiers use 5h chokes. However their metal bell color doesn't seem to match and there seems to be an unusual curve on the bell of the choke (could be an optical illusion effect). This could be a 5h marshall choke or a unknown one... However it doesn't seem to be a c1999 this means that the choke was then changed a second time.

another interesting fact we can see that the OT transformer is smaller during the 78 tour which means the OT was probably stock and then changed later during the vh2 sessions to the 1202-132 as people noted back then in the metro forums.

However for the choke, who knows what josé did put there...

Ya know, as a giant VH fan, even this shit is starting to get beyond old. His tone is not that special. It was his playing. I can name a bare minimum of 10 guitarists in that era off the top of my head with a miles upon miles better tone than his 78-81 tone. Again...it was his PLAYING that was special.

You know who else had better tone than 78-81 EVH?

91-95 EVH 😁

He sounded fuller, clearer much better mixed, but nobody harps on and on endlessly about his tone then, and I don't think it's just because Van Hagar sounded too tame and commercial.

Is it because MusicMan guitars and Soldanos and 5150s aren't unobtanium?

i agree, whatever he was using during that 95 tour with the chorusy thing going on was my favorite tone of his.

The funniest and yet stupidest thing about this thread is you really think back in 76,77 whatever fucking year Ed got his Marshall that he was sitting there thinking about changing out a choke, let alone if he even knew what one fucking did?

It's 2024 and I still don't know what the fuck it is

Didn't we already have this thread last month, or am I tripping?
not at all i just uploaded pictures last month but this time by analysing them i found that the choke on the vh2 records and during the 1978 japanese tour aren't the same on eddie main amp. Then people say this amp was stock x)...

With all do respect, that's exactly 0.000001% of the tone. 99% were his hands..
Besides, we have absolutely no idea how that amps sounded like in the room, because we only have the recorded sound, meaning your ears approx 1 inch away from a speaker blasting a 120db, multiple mics, different speakers mixed, EQd and compressed at least on the mixbus.
I have full respect for your enthusiasm, but there is a life beyond EVH's tone decades ago.
BTW do you know Elvis is living in Barbados? I bet there are some pictures on the Area 51 forum.

GUYZ….WHAT IF THIS IS IT…WHAT IF THIS IS THE SECRET. LETS THEORIZE THIS IN YET ANOTHER POST ON THIS SUBJECT. JUST IMAGINE IF THIS IS IT
