Van halen 1 choke wasn't a c1999 choke

You know another thing that i just learnt and supports the idea that ed's amp was modded by josé too ?

Many people say that the SV20h sounds very van halesque. Did you know that the SV20h uses DC heaters for the preamp section and that no stock marshall uses them ? This move was probably made intentionnally by marshall. Why is that important because those who popularised DC heaters were josé arredondo and jackson lee, they used them on their high gain modded amps to reduce noise. But if you go for DC heaters on a stock regular marshall the tone and the feeling are completely changed. The tone gets a little bit hotter and dirtier.
José used to add small transformers inside guitar amps for this purpose :

when you use AC heaters you usually use 6.3v on pin 4-5 and 9 of the tube with DC heaters you use 12 on pin 4 and 5 only.

Um Jose and lee jackson never used DC heaters... What are you F are you talking about.. Transformer in the picture is a line transformer for the line out..

For this specific amp the dlr head I am wrong, because I know I haven’t seen its guts and you did. It’s all speculation for eddie's amp anyways.

However if we talk about Jose mods doesn’t Fortin offer a modified Marshall 1959 MKII Super Lead, based on a Arredondo modded amp which featured regulated DC heaters to achieve super low noise levels ? I mean I’ve heard from ceriatone and on multiple forums that some Jose amps used dc heaters with extra transformers. However I admit that i never saw any of those amps or any pictures of them.

After further research for Lee Jackson yes I’m wrong.

This thread has made me strongly dislike EVH tone and EVH tone chasing even more than I did before. Thank you.
I’m sorry then, I know I could be wrong about the mods. At the beginning I just wanted to point out the choke in the picture but when people say it was for sure stock it gets me upset because in truth we don’t know at all how the circuit looked like in 1978 moreover those testimonies from close people like David Lee Roth, Rudy Leiren, jose himself and Michael’s Anthony bass tech are quite controversial. I shall stop with this topic.

For vh1 find me someone who nails the rwtd tone or the feel your love tonight tone :

I mean yeah after vh2 I can think that the rest is probably a stock sl68. But for vh1 no way.

Listen to this 1977 rwtd min21:51 it sustains without vibrato and it sounds almost like in the records :

I’m sry no plexi gets this amount of gain the one you listen at 21:51 it’s not possible. This is without the emt reverb and the echo units only.

Ad Nauseum - nobody is going to completely "nail" it because you cannot replicate Ed. Again, youtubers are getting as close as possible, difference is Ed.

Look this topic never bothers me it's just there is so much "talk" through the years of who said this, saw this, stock, Jose modded or not and the fact is, nobody is ever going to know 100% and if they do the stories have been deluded with time with so much hearsay. That's really the only reason I'll comment in these threads, nobody knows.

Further if you really want to get as close as possible there are guys on youtube that are doing it with basic stuff. To me if I was chasing that I'd go that route as opposed to the rabbit hole. Do I have an opinion, yeah a Marshall with varying components as they were known to throw stuff in there, variac, and Ed's signal from pups to pedals, Ed himself and there you go. No I don't think it was modded but if it was, cool. Doesn't matter to me because I've never chased that tone.

Look if you dig the chase it's all good, whatever makes people happy.

I suggest your username be changed to Tail_chaser. At least DLR got somewhere chasing tail.

VH1, to me, sounds so off-axis-mic’d and room mic’d who knows what was coming out of the amp. I always stand off to the side of the cab because it sounds so much better. Very, very different than right in front of the speakers.

You don't have to apologize, it's my problem lol

RR tried to cop Ed's tone ? :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I know, that one was new to me as well

I've heard people who swear up and down the VH1 amp was a jose mod before, that one isn't new - it's an argument that's been litigated to death a million times over.

The argument that RR was chasing EVH's tone, considering their "Rivalry"....uh.... yeah that's news to me

Everyone wants to believe there's some magic super special secret to that sound, that has been kept from the guitar masses by a conspiracy

Unless that secret is actually practicing until you can actually play stuff on VH1

Strange coincidence that once people put the woodshedding hours in, they simply crank up a good sounding plexi and the tone is like 90% there all of a sudden

I've read an interview with RR where he admits to doing some "Ed" things because he felt he had to, with regards to the huge popularity of VH...the hammer on/pull off stuff on Diary. But he wasn't happy to do it and kind of regretted it.

They both have a tone that’s in the same neighborhood. But if you play a Jose side-by-side with a cranked/variac’d Super Lead then the difference is very apparent imo. The Jose is a cool sound but it’s just different.

I have yet to play a MV amp that totally gets there. Killer tones yes but just a different tone and feel.

I don’t care if I sound like VH1…but I found my sound chasing that tone.

The only jose I've played that I liked was Jeremy's MOAB+ mod.

That thing was way beefier and less reedy and thin than most of them ive played.

But yes, they are just different - I guess the point, though, is that the difference should be apparent listening to the first VH album

I always get the feeling people in EVH threads would come to blows if they were stuck in the same room together, lol. What a legend, almost a half century later and people are still guessing, and ready to throw down.

Blows? I hope not.
Blow perhaps...
