I'm not knocking anyone chasing the brown sound, but can anyone who's really into it explain why they're actually chasing it?
"Thank you for reinventing the electric guitar." - Frank Zappa to Edward Van Halen
For me, it's because he had the
best guitar sounds I have
ever heard.
He blew my mind in 1978 when I first heard that magic tone on Van Halen 1. I was 16 back then. I'm 62 now and
still haven't heard anything better.
Also, for a long time the quest for those tones was an unreachable Holy Grail.
There was mystique about it. Nowadays you can get pretty close to his sounds gear wise since Dave Friedman spilled the beans on the specs of Ed's famous Marshall.
There are lot of fantastic tones out there but at the end of the day, Ed is my sonic benchmark.
Most of us have never sounded like him, but we sound a lot better because we wouldn't settle for mediocre tone and Ed lit
that fire for millions of young guitar players....and we
play better too because of him.
AND HE WHAMMIED THE HELL OUT OF A STRAT TREMOLO AND KEPT IT IN TUNE.
We miss ya Ed. God bless.
My favorite Van Halen '78 show:
Also, the Top Jimmy Kemper profiles sound good.
