hey do you guys think the solo had a tad more gain than the rhythm?? I felt like the sustained notes in the solo had more behind them than the fill licks while he played rhythm

Possibly boosted. It’s slightly louder in the mix and there’s delay added too, that’s what I hear.

Yeah there is a bump in level, could have been bumped in Mixing or stepping on the MXR 6 band/GE10 as that was still on his live board in the VHII studio pics taken during the sessions, or it could just about anything really. Ed had the ability to wrestle a solo out of a pretty low gain amp especially if you listen to the gain he was using in 1981-1982 live. Sometimes he seemed to have more gain live from show to show, I guess that could be chalked up to what amps he was using and what he felt like at the time and which ones were blowing up.
 
Looks like someone cleaned up the audio on this 8mm film from September 8th in Niagra Falls NY 78 tour.
