1. What rig are you using for VH I tones?
2. Did EVH use an overdrive?
3. If you wanted the VH I tone, what rig would you choose? (excluding CCV)

I use a Create GR15 and a Fender Bullet. No tone control, bridge humbucker and Volume knob only. I think the rosewood neck is keeping me from nailing it. Need a maple neck.

The amp doesn't need pedals, I have a fluorescent light that causes 60 cycle hum sounding like his phase 90

There are a few amps that nail that tone. The Metroamp 12 series gets really close, Pete thorns clips with his suhr 68 in variac mode come extremely close. David bray has built and modded amps that can nail that tone even at low volumes( I still Own a Marshall he modded for me). And rockstah nailed that tone in his clips with him playing through one of his modded Marshall's or builds. I may do another build using a 68 plexi and take it from there. I know its expensive but it should be fun!

Man I would just get a Superlead or a 2003, put either a Boss OD-1 or Tubescreamer in front of it, and call it a day. I honestly don't know why peeps try to cop his dated tone to be honest, (EVH doesn't even use it anymore, nor has he for EVER!), but I've heard what I suggested come close enough that only your playing will make the real difference. To me, much of the sound comes from making the power tubes sag, and from the old lower wattage speakers being pushed really hard into breakup.

Yes, the player has the greatest effect which is why it won't sound nearly as exact with me playing on clips as opposed to Pete thorn or rockstah or any of the guys who made great clips.

Plexi style circuit with a spike in 400hz and 1250...lots of volume plate reverb mxr phase 90 tape style delay with one repeat should get you close

Cameron Atomica for me, as the core amp. The Rig is another story. It's a multi-amp, w/d/w rig.

I tend to lean more toward/prefer setting it more toward the VH2 sound, because it doubles pretty good for other things too.

You were joking with this thread, right? ;)

Before Metroamp went down, there were a lot of guys getting super close with just stock equipment and a few tweaks on a 12000 series. Echoplex preamp,1176 compressors....

From the Feb. 2014 issue of Guitar World:

EVH: "The first album sounded a little better (than the demos), but it still wasn't the way we imagined it should sound. It's very unique sounding. I wouldn't even know how to duplicate it, to tell you the truth".

GW:Don't ever venture into an amp or guitar forum. You'll see page after page of arguments by people who still can't figure it out either.

EVH: "The overall gutiar sound on the first record isn't that difficult to duplicate, but the overall package of how the whole band sounded was not what Alex and I expected it would be. There is so much EMT plate reverb on it, which is something I never had really heard before. It still holds up today to certain extent. It's not in your face or all that heavy, but the songs are great. If you heard us live, we sounded different. We were much heavier, and that's what Alex and I expected to hear on the record."

Yeah, I think they were using plate reverbs in the mix as well. Ed may not have known but they certainly seemed to be on to something.

I gotta get that Guitar World! That's the most I've ever heard EVH talk about the first album tone!

surprised this has never been asked before...not ever, not on any forum ;)

I was sort-of joking I guess, but check the fruit this thread already bears! I've never read those GW comments by EVH. He actually sounds sober, lucid, and displays a candidness which is unusual for Ed. Thanks for posting!

It's a damn shame what happened with the Metro Forum. Metro was the most relevant music/gear forum on the net IMO. It was the 'Library of Alexandria' for musicians, and now it's gone! Rig Talk is fun for playing 'grab-ass', generating drama, and GC... Metro was a true source. I had many MAF pages downloaded, but lost them when my PC crashed... I've been using a Mac ever since.

My Metro 12000 gets very close. VERY. Plus, it is just a great amp. Support George Metropoulos!!!! MetroAmp is going through a tough time with the server issue.
