This should go a LONG way to demystifying Ed’s 12301 tone.
It won’t, but it should.
This is why Ecstasies and BE’s (both Reinhold and Dave have been in and around that amp a ton) sound the way they do. They are emulating the mix, and not the raw tone.
The tube compression, the subtle but real eq tweaks, and the fully analog chamber reverb is magic dust on the raw Marshall midrange tone (especially with that 50k mid pot).
VH1's guitar tone doesn't sound nearly as "other worldly" without Donn Landee. The YT links are Ted's mixing ideas. Donn came back and remixed the entire record and THAT is what was released. Ted's idea was for it to sound much more like the 1st Montrose record.
the crazy thing is had these tracks been packaged and marketed under authority of Wolfgang and Alex as the Lost Sessions, and maybe have DLR, Hagar, and -fill in the blank- rock legend frontman (steven tyler, robert plant, paul rodgers, etc) try to vocalize over some of these, and mixed my Don Landee, they could have brought in serious coin!
