Vertical 2x12 - Port City! *Update*

Yup, you're right. I've never seen horizontals that wide, but here we are! BTW, this cab is not a REAL Dr. Z. Somebody did a homemade job and just stuck the Z logo on it. Regardless, it sounded better than my Bogner OS 2x12 and my Splawn OS 2x12. I was so surprised.

I am actually going to make a new back panel for it with an oval and two new back panels to give it a 4.5 inch cab in the back rather than a 6". I think those modifications will give me other tonal possibilities with this cab and maybe add slightly more thump.

Cheers!

Hands down the forte s/v 3/d cabinet. The best of both worlds and sounds killer.

I use two in stereo and they decimate any 4/12 cab I ever owned.

Dave is a pleasure to work with, keeps you updated and will do anything custom you want. Port city is nice but only does the ported sound. The added punch of the sealed cabinet is wonderful.

Room filling sound.

Well, I got the Port City and have the Scumbacks (H75/M75 combo). I should be loading it right now. I've decided to take the evening to chill with the Pits and drink some beer on the deck. Beautiful evening in Chicagoland. Hopefully my niece decides to play some Wii and watch me load a cab tomorrow and I'll report back.

Vertical 212 cabs always sound weird, stick to horizontal. I went through some vert cabs and all sounded terrible compared to horrizontal. :)
I found my Port City too mushy and bassy, unbalanced.
Try a diagonal cab by Moho or Stage Craft.

This is what I was wondering, I've never used a vertical 2x12 in my life. They seem interesting and useful though. I will look into Moho and Stage Craft...

I have a Dr Z "Z Best" cab that can be used both horizontal and vertical. It is a great cab that I currently have Lynchbacks in and replaced the V30/G12H30 70th Anny combo. You lose the low end when it is placed vertically. I now use it as a wet cab with the Cameron 4X12 since I have my Bogner OS 2X12 with Scumbacks to switch between the Cameron 4X12 to get a different flavor of tone.

UPDATE: I received the cab and speakers. FINALLY, got them loaded and jammed through a CCV (which I talked to Jim @ Scumbacks as the primary amp for this cab). It's sheer awesomeness! That is all. :D Thanks to hthomas, Dan Klein, Jim Seavall and the forum for your input. Great cab and speakers.

Nice set up. I'll bet it kicks all kind of ass. Now all you need is some solder on those connectors.

Yes I do. :aww: I just wanted to try it out prior to making it permanent, but they look like they're staying. Maybe the iron will come out tomorrow.

I've had a Port City OS Wave 2x12, Splawn 2x12, and Bogner OS 2x12 semi-open back.

I now have these two cabs and I'm never looking back. I'm a vertical convert.

The Dr.Z cab just looks like a horizontal cab turned on its side, which is something I do often, but it doesn't change that the cab was meant to be run horizontal.

That is why I am in favor of horizontal cabs, you can run them vertical when you want or horizontal. Since maybe you want your head to fit better on the cab. Typically I don't see people running a vertical 212 horizontal, so you are kind of trapped into on orientation.

I'm going to say you're wrong on this one. Here are the deminions of the Z cab: VERTICAL is 32" H x 20" W x 11" D. Have you ever seen a horizontal cab at 20"H x 32" W?? No. This cab was custom made for a Dr. Z28 head and it was sold as a vertical. It may not appear to be so in the picture, but it's NOT a horizontal cab. And believe, I ran it horizontal and there was no comparison: vertical sounded 50 x's better.

Just saying.

Buy the way, this Dr. Z cab was better than the Bogner OS 2x12 closed and semi-open back cabinets I compared them to, side-by-side, same amp settings and and all. Even the guys at Guitar Center could not believe how much better this Z cab filled the room and handled deep bass. Whoever made this cab did it right; it has serious mojo. I got lucky. Traded my Splawn 2x12 for it.

Back to the OP, congrats on the Port City!

The Z cab is meant for both vertical and horizontal as I do own one. I prefer horizontal cabs, but vertical cabs can sound awesome too depending on the type of speakers and the configuration!! Well the Bogner OS 2x12 is every bit as good as the Dr Z and depends on the type of speakers used. Scumbacks sound great in these cabs.

Congrats Drew!!!   Now get practicing so you can be like Mr Vai!!!

Hey Mate, the cab in the picture is not an actual Dr. Z cab. I called Dr. Z and emailed the picture to them; they said they never made that cab and that somebody must have made it themselves and stuck a Dr. Z logo on it. I say that you said you had a Dr. Z Best cab, which is what I wanted, but found this used at GC and compared it to several 2x12's and this one beat them all. INcluding a closed back Bogner with V30's.

Point being, I got lucky with this cab and I'll never sell it. Whoever made it knew what they were doing. Regardless, my Forte 3D S/V is better.

I'm curious about the vertical Port City's, but my PC Wave OS was too directional, so I sold it. This one looks great, though.
