I hope you don't have to return it, I purchased my Metro 68' from Destroy all guitars and Cliff is a straight up guy who aims to please. I hope it's something simple. I don't know if they offer a warranty on used gear, but a place like Destroy all guitars should get your issue sorted out from my experience with Cliff. I hope you get the amp working so you can enjoy it.
If you get it fix, although I believe the Metro/Friedman has a built in Variac, I still use one so I can select different voltages since I think it only has a set voltage of 90 or 95 and there's also a small difference between the variac on the amp which resets the bias on the power tubes and an outside variac which it doesn't reset the bias(of course) I use both depending on the tone I want. Good luck bro!
Well I just got it back...WOW. Just WOW. Just an amazing amp. It's so bizarre how responsive it is to different pickups -- I have a Motor City Angel Dust (which is 14.4k output I think?) and it's almost too gainy! Right now I'm just loading it down into a HotPlate and slaving it to a power amp. However, I should be getting the Fryette Power Station by the end of the month.

By far the coolest amp I've ever played through!

I'm glad you decided to get it fixed! I've been playing that amp none stop! Although I have a Mesa 2 90 I'm using the power amp section of my PT100 because I like the feedback control and the resonance switch, which help since I can't crank it loud enough to get the low end.
My 2 90 needs work, when I engage the modern or deep settings, I get a ground loop, so I need to get it fixed.

Try using a 10 band graphic eq between the Hot Plate and the power amp using a mild smily eq curve using -2db or 3db at 1 kHz as your starting point. It scoops the tone a bit and emphasizes the low and hi end. It also takes pedals really well. I've been using an OCD or my Furman PQ3 and it gives you more gain without to much distortion.

I love slaving my amps, If you have a good attenuator or dummy load, to me being able to have control over the eq post distortion gives me more flexibility.

Good luck with your amp enjoy!!!

The 6 band will work but there's something about lowering the 500Hz, 1 kHZ and 2 kHz that the 6 band doesn't have but you can try by first setting the eq flat then lowering 400Hz by -1 to -2 db 800 Hz, by -2 to -3 db and 1.6KHz by -1 to - 2db or just experiment with a mild smily to a more pronounce curve until you like what you hear. With a 10 band eq I use 1 kHz as a point of reference for the rest of the frequencies like if I lower 1 kHz by -3 db, then that's the starting point of the curve then shape the rest until you have a smily curve. But you have to be careful not to make it too scooped or you loose the mids which is important when recording guitars since that's the main frequency that makes the guitar cut through a mix.
