Sounds vintage! Why not use a boost with a low output pickup? Do these not take boosts well or do they not respond the same way?

If it's like my Crate Shockwave; which has a very similar preamp, it already has a crap ton of gain and probably doesn't like boosts. Putting a boost in front of my Crate makes it sound like your stacking about 5 Metal Zones on top of each other. Buzzy and oversaturated.

If you lower the gain on the amp I think they take boosts fine. I used to use a maxon od808 with my old vh-140c sometimes, I think boosting it with a metalzone is a little overkill, compresses it too much and it's already a fairly compressed sounding amp. Sold that amp regrettably.

They LOVE to be boosted. Here’s my old one with a Fortin TS9 in front and an 11k 80’s Bill Lawrence.
Beast of an amp, but ultimately I sold it because I was able to dial my C++ in to sound very similar, and it did it better.

Damn! That thing sounds massive in both clips. I just looked up that amp on Reverb and they've not cheap. But considering the sounds you can get, it's well worth the price IMO.

Did Lee Jackson design that amp?

i didnt boost trying to keep a fair comparison, but yeah it takes boosts as well as any other amp, and it does a lot more than the scooped thing i tend to go for, mids up and the treble down turns into a whole different thing.

no, those were the VL's, which are probably going for cheaper than these now

Yes they also sound great set like that as well, it’s gets pretty juicy for a SS amp.
