My pleasure Dude... Seriously, new glass gives me wood. I love checking out tubes - just love 'em.

Peace,
V.

Ordered a bunch of tubes :D I figure, what the hell, I can try them in anything I have and if it doesn't sound sweet, try another.

Looking to try some 6550's in my VH4S and checking the preamps tubes as well. I have been getting a volume/fullness difference in the 2 channels. Mark2c suggested it might be an issue with one of the phase inverter tubes. I'll try some stuff and hopefully have some fun too.

6550's RULE in the VH4S!! I was blown AWAY with them... Totally excellent match for the head. You running a newer head or an older head? Just wondering... I'm very stoked on the neutrality of the tubes, and ya, they're hella powerful.

Peace,
V.

Don't know how to date the head

My serial number reads 021148. I am thinking it's an older head.

Looks to me like an '02 Dude...

Still, whatever - some of the best Diezel tones came from THAT VERY AMP THAT VERY YEAR!!

Tube it, trick it and punch it - end of story

Yeah V,

So after I pulled the cabinet off, it is for sure 2002 VH4S. Sweet! Then, I just put new =C= 6550's in and did the biasing thing. Now I am trying some preamp tubes. I have a few Chinese B's, a bunch of Ruby 12AX7C5's and A bunch of Tung Sol 12AX7's. Any advice on positions...V1, V2, etc??

VH4S:
V1 Used by all channels
V2 Used by channel 4
V3 Used by channel 2/3/4
V4 Used by all channels
V5 Mixer and Send buffer
V6 Return driver 1
V7 Return driver 2
V8 Phase Inverter 1
V9 Phase Inverter 2

So, QUALITY GLASS that offers super clean and transparency in V1 and V4. You can get some aggressive glass in V2 and V3. Transparent in V5. And work horses in V8 and V9

Hours of mixing and matching. I've run my head with all TAD7025S pre's and that's an expensive arsenal to go with. I've now come back to running Chinese B/C's or TAD 12AX7 Premiums in the higher gain sockets, and Tung Sol's in the PI's. Secondly, you can easily run Chinese/Shugs of B or C grade right through the whole head. As well, I've also run ALL Tung Sol's through the entire head. It's a personal preference, but as I posted in an earlier thread, I'm getting sick of screwing with my tubes and just wanna get back to playing more than fussin'.

Peace,
V.

Thanks for the clarity V. It is a lot of work changing and biasing and changing tubes...would much rather be playing, as you said! Thanks again for all the help.

Rock!

Well, the power tubes are set'n'go, really... But them blasted preamps man, hours and hours on those blasted preamps...

I'm just of the mindset now that overall, my amps sound good outta the box - 'least my Diezels and Bogs do anyway... They come loaded with Chinese glass, they sound good, I'm good. I think everything's a cycle really. I've brightened my EQ up with different pre's and darkened my tone with different pre's and blended and mixed and matched. And it's fun, for like a week or so, and after that, for me anyway, I started losing grip on the original tone in my head because of all the mix'n'matchin' going on. Said screw it - back to the Chinese B's or C's and that was it.

Know what I mean?

But ya, I still go candy for glass... Those TAD7025S and the Tung Sol's are just pimp

Need to stock up on a few more of the chinese...have enough Tung Sol now. Still looking for a good place to buy the Ruby HG+ tubes Papa Diezel has been talking about. Can't seem to find anywhere that has them in stock.

I will play around for a while and see if I can find "my" tone, you never know what could be possible. Fun, if nothing else.

I'm almost positive the Ruby's are simply rebranded Chinese/Shuguang 12AX7B's or C's. I'd be willing to bet money on it - I think there was a thread out there about this not too long ago - Ruby's, GT's and a host of others are all the same tube, just rebranded....

Peace,
V.
