Here's what I have in my happy room (or had, as some have been sold quite recently
2001 VH4
2002 VH4
2006 VH4
2008 VH4
2000 VH4S
2004 VH4S
2009 VH4S
Odd as it may seem, the older model VH4's seemed to be more predictable in the "tone" department - I wasn't hammering out clean lines too much with them, but their gain channels were smooth, toneful and very lush.
The new amps have more "bite" to them, and the cleans seem to be louder and just as clear. I know A LOT of this has to do with tubes, as I fooled around with EL34, 6L6, and a host of 12AX7 brands and models. Personally? I have a brand new VH4S (thanks again, Terry) and I am still getting "used to" the 6550 tubeset. There's a chance if it doesn't warm up to what I'm used to, I may go back with the Tung Sol and/or SED EL34's. But the one thing I really notice with the "new" amps is louder cleans, and more power. This could all be due to the 6550's too.
And yes, these amps were all run through the same variety of cabinets. I love the old tone of the older models but I think it's just a matter of changing tubes personally. 6550's take more oomph before they start their break up, and this can change the tone immensely. Again, the EL34 equipped heads were just predicable to me because I am used to them.
Either way, sometimes I think it's best to get a Diezel, and log off all websites and forums and stop reading magazine updates and everything else and just play...
