I have had both and the newer ones sound better to my ear.

I agree and ironically... I said the same thing a few months back and had my post deleted. I guess when the site admin makes the same claim, it gets to stay. Interesting.

No matter how much certain people might not want to deal with the facts, the 2007 and newer VH4 amps do sound much, much better. There have indeed been changes made.

Hopefully this post doesn't get deleted.

edit: They both sounded great, I preferred the voicing of the newer amp, seemed fuller and richer to me. It could just be the difference in tubes and a host of things but my experience points to the newer ones being more robust. Your milage may vary. Also I can see no reason why Peter and Terry and crew would have any stake in saying the old ones were as good.

I haven't discussed it with them but it would seem to me that it would be in their best interest to say the new ones are loads better so the Diezel nation would trade up and they could sell more amps. They are not doing that which I think speaks volumes of their integrity and honesty as they see it. .

+1 ........ only different and better is a matter of taste

Mine's a 2006 and sounds awesome.
Played a 1996 (I think) for a couple of years before this one, which was a bit smoother overall.
A bit different, but as awesome as the 2006.

edit: and to drive some people insane: it even had an additional preamp tube (like the bluefaces). Clean and channel 3 (from remembering, inbetween I had a Herbert) are sounding the same though.

WIzzzzz Long time no talk man!!! How have you been!?!? I'm moving to Miami in about a month and a half, we gotta hook up and rock out with the Diezels down there!

well, I have a 2001 and while the amp sounds the same "tonically" it just sounds more pissed off and has more gain, than it did before Peter updated it.

like I said, it sounds the same as before, but now it's like it has a VERY clean boost infront all the time

Here's what I have in my happy room (or had, as some have been sold quite recently):
2001 VH4
2002 VH4
2006 VH4
2008 VH4

2000 VH4S
2004 VH4S
2009 VH4S

Odd as it may seem, the older model VH4's seemed to be more predictable in the "tone" department - I wasn't hammering out clean lines too much with them, but their gain channels were smooth, toneful and very lush.

The new amps have more "bite" to them, and the cleans seem to be louder and just as clear. I know A LOT of this has to do with tubes, as I fooled around with EL34, 6L6, and a host of 12AX7 brands and models. Personally? I have a brand new VH4S (thanks again, Terry) and I am still getting "used to" the 6550 tubeset. There's a chance if it doesn't warm up to what I'm used to, I may go back with the Tung Sol and/or SED EL34's. But the one thing I really notice with the "new" amps is louder cleans, and more power. This could all be due to the 6550's too.

And yes, these amps were all run through the same variety of cabinets. I love the old tone of the older models but I think it's just a matter of changing tubes personally. 6550's take more oomph before they start their break up, and this can change the tone immensely. Again, the EL34 equipped heads were just predicable to me because I am used to them.

Either way, sometimes I think it's best to get a Diezel, and log off all websites and forums and stop reading magazine updates and everything else and just play...

 wow V - when it comes to owning VH4's - you win! :2thumbsup: love my 2008 as well -amazing! :rawk:

Well, don't get me wrong, I don't have a room just full of them, I went through several and moved them after using them. I currently own 3 VH4 variants (1 VH4S, 2 VH4) - 2 brand new, 1 not so new. I have a few boxed up and sitting in storage as well - might be an eBay thing or a private sale thing as I know a lot of musicians who love 'em but can't get them either due to the brand new price or availability and reliability of used ones. The reason I am intimately aware of the sonic differences in them is by listening to high-rez recording with my headphones at the DAW console. It's when the recordings/tracks are isolated from one another that the differences are really apparent. One thing for sure though, if I only could have ONE amp, it'd be the VH4S hands down.

Have a great Sunday y'all,
V.
