You all will think I'm crazy for having done this, but I used to replace the power tubes in my VH4 with Smicz one watt power tubes. At only 4 watts, I could use a 2x12 cab, turn up the dials as far as I wanted, and get everything I wanted in tone from the VH4.

It was still loud, but due to the low wattage, I was able to turn up the amp's dials much further and get more tone from the amp in it's power range.

This isn't for everyone, but it worked very well for me.

did the am kept it's same character Stephen? or did you noticed any tonal change?

I've said it many times & I'll say it again, VH4 sounds the way VH4 has to sound when you get your master at least around 2:00 & Volume at 10:00. If you haven't gone that far than YOU HAVE NO CLUE what you are missing, once you are there you'll know where the $$$$ went. Herbert needs to get just as loud as VH4 to put a green smile on my face, but it keeps overall character of the sound even at lower levels.
