Me personally, I bought the VH4 for one purpose...CH3. It was to fill a hole and provide some well articulated tone at gain levels. For what I play, it is not a head I would use by itself because it really spits nails (in a good way). This is one of the finest amps available.

Now the Herbie, which I just got the other day is my new workhorse. The versatility of it and the monsterous tone is second to none. It will do everything from AC/DC to Slipknot between Ch2 and Ch3. I guess the cleans are good. Clean is clean to me and I never go to Ch1 anyway. There is a lot of very stage friendly switching options on the Herbert and the Mid-Cut is what makes this amp for me, as I am always scooped!

If someone were to ask me which one to buy, it would be the Herbert, if you could only have just one!

nbarts has the best comparison here @ viewtopic.php?f=49&t=38953

Awsome info...

In terms of the tight and looseness , if you had to compare the VH4 & herbie to another amp as far as feel what would be similar?

just curious, im leaning towards the herbie...

Hard to say. They aren't voiced clones of anything, like many of the amps on the market today. They are both full and articulate well. The Herbie is has the most gain, hands down and is the most all-around in versatility. the VH4 will stay tighter on all channels, except for 4, where it gets really compressed and a little muddy. The Herbie is tight in normal playing on all channels.

My only frame of reference would be falling between SLO and an Ubershcall....

Go for a Herbie and don't look back! Someone told me that a while back. About $10,000 and 3 heads later, I took their advice.....

Hi Steve,

I'd like to see your reasoning why, I enjoy a good argument. :) IMO Soldano sound falls between Bogner & Deizel sound.

VH4 - tighter, less saturated more organic. Make sure it is a 2007 model or newer.
Herbert - tight, but not like the VH4, more saturated, more modern/hi-fi sounding

The Herbert was my favorite amp for 2+ years until I played a VH4.

I'd say the closest amp in terms of feel to a VH4 that I've played would be a newer model VHT UL or a Splawn Nitro. Obviously the Diezel has its own unique voicing though. The Herbert is more like a tighter version of an Uberschall, but not as harsh sounding. Of course the herbert has better mid-gain/clean tones too.

Agree, probably I should have said near Soldano and Bogner (not between).

Gain, growl, chunk, no frills - I think UBER
Tight and articulate, no frills - I think SLO
Gain, growl, chunk, articulate, frills o'plenty - I think Diezel

Either way you spin it you will be happy with either the Herbert or the VH4...or both. LOL   I do prefer my Herbert. But they are simply both great heads.

You didn't say what type of music you played. That's the most important thing to know before recommending either
