Mines _still_ in the box it arrived in almost 2 weeks ago :aww:

FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAK!!!

I think both amps are really versatile.
When I had the VH4...I would really use both channel 3 and 4 quite a bit during a jam session.
When I had the Herebert....I used the Channel 2+ more then anything.
Both amps have good clean and both can do rock and metal.....
so either amp is a WIN/WIN in my book.
But after owning both....when I go to buy another Diezel .....

It will be the VH4S!!

I got a Herbert early last year.
Then I got a VH4 late last year.
Playing them together is awesome.
Playing them by themselves is cool.
However, for MY playing needs, I sold the Herbert and kept the VH4. Simply based on Tightness, and the ch.3 metal chugging feel.
Herbert was slightly too loose for me. just slightly. It's more open.
Both amps, stock, are fairly compressed, VH4 more compressed.
The Herbert has more Bottom End, and bass power. very much so. but the VH4 is no slouch either...it's just different.
but having both were a little too similar.
If there was an amp that was like the Herbert and VH4 combined, it would be king.
I also liked that the VH4 has the input right in front to feed another amp right from the get go.
I've used it for this purpose and it works great.
I also recently made a slight change to mine and it is less compressed feeling and I like it even more.

It's up to you, your ears, your playing style, your guitars, your cab, lots of variables, you need to decide, in the end.

The beast has risen. Totally off topic and wrong thread, but just had to add - this thing got some play today.

Seriously SICK sounding preamp

Just FYI,
Mo

PS - if Diezel comes out with a pre, I think that's it - game over, I'll be a pro-pre-pimp

Would you really buy a VH4S over a mono VH4? I know why, but why?

Steve

If it's main use is "huge wall of sound" high gain, Herbert. I really couldn't jive with the VH4, too dark and compressed for me.

I have 2 different cabs....and the Stereo head allows me to dial them in together.
One is bright and I can add more depth to just that one cab. Separate volume controls for each cab as well...
Like having 2 Diezels while just plugging into one amp.

I've had both, I like the 'S' best - primarily due to the ability to dial in two different complementary sounds on each side. But the BIGGEST kick is using true stereo FX such as DD, modulation, phaser and so forth - THAT'S a trip!! Love it!! But for ease of use and having it all in one spot, I believe there's something to be said about a 1x100W mono head (VH4) and I'd not hesitate for any reason if I had to go back to mono.

Ok my fault.
I am looking for the "larger than life guitar sound wall". I know that you need to blend some different amps to achieve that, but I'm looking for the best amp to get a fat distortion rhythm sound.
So if the VH4 is just the way to go because it is so versatile and Herbert has more of that "guitar wall" sound, than I would rather go for the Herbert.
What I want to say is, that huge distortion rhythm tone is the main focus. Please don't care too much about versatility with your recommendations.
Thanks anyway for all the feedback so far. At the moment I'm leaning towards the VH4

Diezel Herbert. Think the opening guitar tone from "Doomsday Clock" on the Zeitgeist SP album. Loose, gainy, and powerful.

Diezel VH4. Think the opening guitar tone from "Jambi" on the latest Tool album and has a lot more potential for gain. Very tight and precise.

Excellent comparo. Both offer a wall of sound (if you're thinking of the VH4, then get the VH4S with 2 cabs and truly get a STEREO WALL OF SOUND). If it's simply hardcore, metal rhythm sounds, the additional 2 power tubes (6 in total) and the primary voicing of the Herbert will give this to you and the power an outrageous 180+W valve dependent.

Your call - just make it
V.

PS - and might I add a number of other Tool songs that simply kick ass with pure Diezel tone, Vicarious (same CD) springs to mind. Or, for pure no-vocal tone, Triad off of Lateralus. This is the V talking...!! Not Herb...
