Vrad - BB preamp?

Great, another pedal I need to try. However I am pretty happy with either my OCD or Keely TS-9. But you think the DD would be so much better I should check it out?[/quote]

So much better is too subjective. I think the OCD can cop most of the Barber DD area plus the OCD has more gain on tap, but the dynamics of the Barber I like better. I think the Barber would sound huge in front of JCM 800.

amiller, if I remember correctly, you know Vinnie Moore?
Do you know which dimarzio model he used in the neck of his MM guitars?

No, not off hand but I can drop him an email and ask for you...besides, I haven't wished him a happy new year yet. :D

By the way, you do know that he's endorsing Deans now. :)

edit:

Email sent to Vinnie.

Yep :)
I tried to find the specs of his Dean, but I could only find the name of his signature full-size bucker.

Thanks, man :) Mucho appreciated!

... I am surprised the big one is not true bypass

Are you saying that because the advertisment doesn't mention true bypass? Do for sure know it's not true bypass?

The standard BB says it is true bypass on the pedal and on the Xotic site. This talks about a 1Meg ohm input and of 1kohm output impedance which suggests to me that it has a nice buffer. A nice buffer is fine, I just thought they would make all their pedals true bypass. It sure wouldn't prevent me from getting the pedal, but the standard one looks like all I would want....

I could be totally wrong on the bypass.

I tried all the xotic pedals in front of my 800. They defintely changed the tone to me. I have tried many many pedals. I did like the BB for solos though!!! Thinking of getting nother for solos.

OCD v3 I have and love. For nice bump I like the MXR 10EQ. Keeley SD-1 was good but thinned out leads. Looking to get a Barber DD though.

BTW Vlad.. what have you done to your SLP? Is it same a the Rockstah mod? PPMIV? Also are your clips at full earth shattering loud or decent volume?
Been trying to find your clips got links?

Yeah, I'm thinking the standard is all I really need too. Besides, I don't want to be on the "bleeding" edge of technology. I haven't seen any reviews or much of anything regarding the BB plus preamp...makes me a little nervous. :scared:

Anyone try the Cusack Screamer? I've heard good things about that boost.

Here's my email to Vinnie and his response:

AL: "Which dimarzio model did you use in the neck of your MM guitars?"

Vinnie: "It was a dp181. I have used dp188's a little too. They are a little warmer, but the 181 was pretty much the one I always used."

Al: "By the way, Happy New Year!!! I hope everything is going great for you and your family."

Vinnie: "Thanks man and same to you."

Al: I'm still looking forward to the next Vinnie Moore solo CD...any news?"

Vinnie: "It's totally finished now. I just need to master it and get it out there...so a couple of months I would guess. vm"

Yup Lynch loves the Cusack I heard from his guitar tech. curious myself?

OK...I pulled the trigger on a BB preamp. I should get it in about five days...

Sweet, looking forward to your review. Its between a BB preamp and an Fulltone OCD for me. I need something for my AC30CC1.

I have been doing some reading the AC booster and BB preamp, is the AC supposed to be more like the breakup of an AC30 and the BB supposed to be more marshall like, with more gain?

used to have the xotic ac booster which was cool, and did the nice roll down the volume and clean up trick, but was a little too focused/tight sounding with the coyote. heard great things about the xotic bb preamp pedal so i nabbed one

chain is:

tyler strat w/ kinman avn 59 in neck/middle holmes 450 in bridge->vht valvulator->mxr dynacomp->barber direct drive->xotic bb preamp->arion chorus->danelectro danecho->tc g-force-> coyote low sens w/ tone cranked, bass on 2, treble on 5->8ohm out to gh30 1x12

direct drive versus bb preamp

miced with one sm 57 and one sm 58

the sequence of sounds in the clip:

-coyote clean with comp---(danecho and tc delay/verb are on throughout and amp settings are same throughout)

-comp and arion chorus

-direct drive/no comp

-bb/no comp

-comp/dd (the first section where you hear single lead notes)

-comp/bb (the plucked van halenish chords and the ac/dc stuff)

-comp/dd/bb (lead part)

the coyote sounds particularly voxy on these clips, particularly with the clean and comp/ direct drive sections, yet it also has some marshall grind and sparkle happening with the bb pedal

the bb sounds REALLY great hitting channel 3 of my eggie TOL 100! timmons tone.
clip worthy...coming soon....
