I got a few upgrades done so I thought I'd share in one thread.

Here is what the Vypyr looks like stock. It sounds better than it looks.

Plasic Bat Wing (fangs) Removal project:

There are 4 screws on the inside that hold the bat wings/fangs on. One of those screws is hard to reach due to a transformer (at least on the Vypyr 60).

Therefore, I had to remove the chassis - which was fairly easy and I wanted to take some gut shots anyway (see next post).

Take out the power tube cage, power tubes and speaker. There are 4 smaller screws along the base of the chassis and 4 long screws that are fed from the top.

Here is a shot of the 4 short screws along chassis ^
And then the longer screws that hold chassis in from top v

With the chassis out I can access this '4th' screw much easier

Then I measure for and drilled holes for the Peavey logo. I didn't think it would look right without that.

Then I installed some blue LED lights

Here is the final product. Much better imo.

I ran out of room so I'll post a few more pics in the next post along with the gut shots.

Thanks for watching :D :D :D

Love my vyper 60W - they really do sound better than they look. It is still no comparison to a fully tubed amplifier that breathes when you play, but for bedroom use and generally great practice use it serves its purpose and does it well.

Love the new grill face look - much more simplified and professional. Never even thought about it myself but will take mine off too

^ Hey

yeah, I remember you.

what is your new avatar - i can't make it out?

Thanks for stopping by.

what is your favorite amp model/setting?

a guy I know at UG posted this about some of the Vypyr components. Pretty interesting.

ya if you start from the top down on this

small resistors are probably xicons
yellow tube caps are mallories which is what stateside builders use when they aren't using sozo or orange drops
big pink resistor is either a koa or a panasonic. Koa is more likely.
all the big electro caps are panasonic or IC or nichicon
there are snubber bypasses on all the major power supply nodes.
there's a bunch of small capacitors that are standard on the higher end japanese maxon pedals.
It's all USA or Japan for the most part.

that's a lot better then say like the recent dr z stuff which has been using a ton of samwha and lelon and other korean and chinese shit
.

I actually like the krankenstein and 6505 models the best - use a boost up front, 10% reverb, and set the post volume pretty high controlling the sweet spot with the main master.

My avatar is a Russian GU81M tube used in the 1930's - 60's and in radio transmission towers to transmit a 10-50Mhz carrier frequencies and also in the military for broadcasting systems. The picture is just the heater filaments glowing which requires about 120W of power alone - just a very monstrous task and a huge tube. 20 year lifespan with 1600VDC on the anode at 60% dissipation. They have also been used in audio. I had a project 2 years ago that involved two of them biased class AB but when it came time to develop of power transformer a regular house breaker could not power it

^ That is insane

It looked like a preamp tube but too big. I guessed right.

Nice mods!

^ yeah......looks much better

thanks for sharing

my fav amp model would have to be the Recto. Red, pregain on 3pm, EQ flat'ish across 12pm, post and master around 11am. No boosts or FX

I also find i like the EQ almost flat - 5/4.5/5.5 or in that ballpark. Really like the wylde overdrive the best.

Nice. I still have to de-fang my T60. I'm running FW 1.66 and use the #2 -dark cabinet setting. I put some JJ KT66's in and dropped the PI to a TungSol AT7. The stock speaker disintegrated (I bought it used). I replaced it with an Eminence Delta 12B. Sounds great.

Recto Red is my 2nd fav, and by a long shot. 6505 Red is where its at :D EQ, Gain, and Post Gain pretty much straight up noon. Master is barely on. It gets loud, and quick. Its insane how loud a 30w digital modeler can get. My solid state 30w Marshall never even got close to this loud - and I've taken my Vypyr to band practice with a LOUD drummer and rhythm guitarist using a 3 channel Triple Rec

^ I never quite gel'd with the 6505 setting but I'll have to spend more time with it. I was super in-love with the Diezel red model for the longest time. Spongy and tight at the same time if you know what I mean. Then I decided the Recto was just tighter. Again, I'm not using any boosts or anything else - which honestly is a whole other parameter I need to spend more time with.

Yep - get that de-fang done bro.

really cool thread there.

I really should register over there and hang out a bit. I need to do the software update and I generally like most of the Peavey amps anyway. Between UG and here I just don't have much time for more 'distractions'

KT66 huh? I'll have to try that. I have a JJ in PI now too and also tried a JAN Phillips 5751. Interesting note you have on Deoxit. This amp also takes all kinds of pedal really well too for what it is worth. Great amp all around.

What is your thought about those led lights are they working well?

they are OK.

i like the LED strips with the adhesive back better. The one in the Vypyr is older and is more like a want or bar and is harder to mount.
