Want a Mesa Mark tone, but need cheaper alternatives...

I saw a loaded red stripe Mark III in Green Bay in a shop for $400 .... went home to grab cash & was gone less than a hour later when I got back. I have a IV .../ but at that price ?

Just dropped the asking price for my 6505 about $50. Hopefully itll sell in a few days. If not. Im dropping it another $50.

I just want this amp gone before It loses its value even more...

Dude thosee amps arent gonna lose all worth. Still worth more than the ultras.. combos are always harder to get rid of than heads. I would get an eq and run what ya got. I like the 5150s a lot better than the ultras, and they will get fluid with less gain imo. An eq in the loop would make drastic changes in the mids of the amp

Get the Ultra Plus... Tung sol 12ax7 in v1 and v3, jj 12dw7 in v2...sovtek LPS in phase inverter....winged C power tubes...use crunch channel with a boost ..thank me later :D (this tube combo also works in peavey XXX but it sounds a bit thinner...just a bit. )
 
Have to chime in again-stick to your guns and work towards the Mark. :yes: Only a Mark sounds like a Mark, and that's the tone you're after. Not that the other Peaveys are bad by any means. I LOVE the Ultra and the Classics, but you know what you want. Just sayin.

I'd have to agree. The Marks hold my favorite lead tone (still) and a MarkIII with GEQ can be downright crushing in the infamous V pattern....especially with some volume behind it :D
 
Never settle when it comes to gear cuz in the end you'll never truly be satisfied. If you want a Mark save up and get a Mark especially if your price range in already in the ballpark of what one might cost. You'll be a lot happier after you just save the extra 100 or so bucks and get what you've wanted all along. I used to try and get certain tones with cheaper alternatives and all that leads to is money spent and gear flipped. Now if i have my mind set on a tone i want i just work and save my money until i can buy what i need to get it. Hope this helps!
 
But what im saying is I can just get the Ultra which is closer to what I want, Id have an extra $200-ish saved up. Then later on as I gather up more money, I can sell the ultra, and have my money for a Mark.

Id rather be closer and have extra money in the bank than not be close at all and be stuck with this amp.

And yea I understand its harder to sell combos, but Ive had this for sale I think 8-9 months now. Its getting a bit out of hand.
 
I ended up buying the Ultra 212 for $190!

Swapped the tubes and it sounds REALLY nice so far. I want to get a good and cheap OD just to boost it a bit, and a Graphic EQ for the loop. After those 2 purchases I think I will be good for a while :)

Love it 10x more than my 5150, Ill probably never use that thing again.
 
what is it about the 5150 that you dont like?

i had NO issues dialing mine in. i used it for a while then put some mods on switches and loved it even more. 5150 is a really underappreciated amp that can get a multitude of tones for despite the lack of options...you just gotta tinker with them....and, they require some volume to get some balls behind that tone too.

have you tried putting new power tubes in it? or switching preamp tubes around?
 
Slowly save and get what you want. Too many times you hear of people (I have too) buying gear that is almost wha they want.

The eq pedal will vary your tone for a while. If you buy it used on the cheap even better. Probably will never sell it anyway.

Gotta say it is cool you are thinking of saving for gear and school instead of getting wasted. Well done.

Ok, I exaggerated lol

I will surely use my 5150 again when I feel like doing some cool metal rhythm tones. I dont think anything will top that for "Aggressive" tone. The amp is MEAN. :rock:

But for what I like to play, its TOO mean. I wanted something a bit smoother and natural sounding. And more "On the fly versatility". Im starting to play shows with my band quite frequently and I wanted something that suited my NEEDS. Not really my wants. I play mostly clean stuff in this band, but when I get home I like doing the "Petrucci" lead tone stuff.

The clean on the Ultra is VERY nice. Its SLIGHTLY darker than a fender, but it seems to fit my guitars perfectly. Its very "Gilmourish" to me. (Shine on you crazy diamond) :D

Its also slightly smaller and lighter. :thumbsup:

If it was up to me, Id keep the 5150, keep the Ultra, buy a Mark IVB, and 50 random pedals. :rock:

But considering my tight budget only one can stay for now :(

And yes, I changed preamp tubes, power tubes, and played with the EQ for a LONG time. The shared EQ was a huge bummer for me, and it just had a different TYPE of gain compared to the Ultra.

Yea I agree. But I just wanted to get closer. For $190 I think im not doing too bad considering what theyre going for in other places :thumbsup:

I will surely be buying used. I dont like buying new gear except certain things. Like guitars, I usually buy used, but I want my next one to be "custom" from Carvin or something like that.

And thank you for the last comment! Im trying my best to be logical and reasonable about what I want to do with my life. I WANT to be a professional musician, but its just so damn hard to get noticed. So I try and stay on track with school incase I find a career I like, I can just play gigs on the weekends... ;)
 
Just bought a Studio pre myself and I plan on running it into my Stiletto's loop return. Looking forward to getting it. Played a used Studio 22+ combo in GC and when hooked into a 4x12 was ridiculously heavy. I almost bought that but a Studio Pre is more useful to me.
