As far as cost, if you get the Body finished, and finish the neck yourself, you're looking at around 850-1000 for one of these, depending on how much electronics are in it, pickups, type of wood for body, finish, etc.

Doing the wipe on satin Minwax poly saves a lot of dough, and gets GREAT results.

And you're gonna have to get the frets spot leveled and the nut slots lowered... I invested in the tools to do that, so I'm not sure how much a tech charges to do that.

Normal tech would charge $100-150 to do a fret leveling and nut adjustment. I'm sure glad I have a luthier who's a really good friend

Also another good way of finishing a neck is with Tungoil! I've got a mahogany body guitar that I finished both the body with tungoil. The neck we did a nitro satin finish. Worked out very well! I love my guitars with the nitro finishes for sure!

+1 Tungoil does work well, and you can always add another coat whenever you want to.

+1 for both Tung Oil and Nitro. This is the guitar I scratch-built a few years ago. I sprayed it in Nitro. Drill buffed it. The neck is finished in Tung-Oil only. The rest of the build is on http://www.dafguitars.com
