Was EVH using his old trusty Marshall still in 1985?

He did roughly 10 years ago at the old Tone Merchant's shop in Anaheim. I actually got to see it -- it was tagged and ready to go in the back store room. FWIW, Soldano, Friedman, Bogner, Suhr, and Fryette have all seen the amp inside and out.
That original Tone Merchants shop was pretty fucking cool...I visited there and played some insane Roccoforte amps and some killer guitars...kinda the first real booooteek shop you could waltz into. Trying to remember his name but I ended up randomly meeting an old HCAF / early R/T member that day

Beyond the never ending quest for 'WTF was Eddie using?' not much else seems to be looked at as to why they were so catchy and successful? This dude breaks it all down and geeks way out on the song structure

Michael McDonald wrote the keyboard parts for the 1984 album.
Not many folks know that.

I've never understood the obsession with what other players use. Ed recorded Van Halen 1 with what was basically a bunch of cobbled together junk. A Strat style guitar made from scrapes, cheap Japanese knock-off Explorer, $10.00 phase 90, $20.00 flanger, $75.00 tape echo, $5.00 EQ, $100.00 VOX and a $300.00 Marshall. In those days you could pick this stuff up for next to nothing. If I had one dollar for every time I thought to myself... It's too bad this guy can't play as great as his Marshall stack looks..., I could buy a '68 Marshall Super Lead 100 and not sound anything like EVH. Go look at the prices on Music Man EVH guitars on Reverb... How many tracks did Ed record using that guitar? Ed's best stuff was performed using the same collection of surplus used on Van Halen 1.

I never understood the EVH sound until I cranked a plexi. Then it was obvious.

The playing and control is the next and difficult step. Spend your formative years becoming a groove motherfucker. It's easy! /s

How the fuck this has anything to do with what we're discussing rn you dolt?

I am part of the majority of researchers who reference our claims and back them up with sources, rather than pretending I am the source of the claim and know what Eddie Van Halen used.

In this instance, my source happens to be Eddie Van Halen on video talking about how volume issues led to the new amp which he didn't change the voltage on leading him to use a Variac to get that brown sound.

If people want to challenge that or complain about it then the burden of proof is on them to reference their claims. If they can't then it's easy to dismiss those claims and forget about them.

I play about six songs from Van Halen using his setup. I have his tone so I am happy. In fact, I have tones plural. About four of them from him.

So you're basically in Harvard and you're conducting a research about EVH?

You ever notice every ToneDig post is some long thing trying to teach people shit they already know &/or have read about for YEARS.
Literally this, 100 percent. It’s hillarious, embarrassing, and uncomfortable how dumb he looks all at once.

DID YOU GUYS KNOW JIMI CLAPTON USED A LEZ POLL? YOU CAN RECORD HIGH QUALITY GUITAR IN YER BEDROOM WITH A LOAD BOCKS, BUY MY BOOK TO BECOME A ROCK STAR FOR 56 SHEKELS USING MY HARVARD PRESS PEER REVIEWED RESEARCH INTO WHY THE SKY IS BLUE AND HUMBUCKERS CANCEL HUM

WHAT? YOU DONT AGREE WITH VOLDEMORT?

Unidyne 57s…. That was what the early records were. Get an older uni 57, the high end sounds like Van Halen no matter what amp it’s on haha. Also he made the “fredman technique” or something very very similar way cool before it was a thing as well.
Yes, that semi fredman technique is one of the "secret sauce" parts of achieving the EVH tone recorded. It supposedly wasn't exactly a 55 degree angle like an actual fredman clip, but I can't find any reliable source as to what angle exactly it was. Either way, the uni57 TOTALLY has that evh high end, all the time, its actually kind of funny the first time you try it - because everyone struggled for years to duplicate that tone, and it turns out its not terribly complicated.

You know that feeling when you’re at a high school talent show and all the parents are sitting there, and that one girl gets up and sings completely flat, and you smile and nod with that encouraging look on your face, but inside you’re cringing and you’re just sad and embarrassed for her…
…Every time You post something, you are that girl.
