What’s the probability that Van Halen 1 was this settup

its like i asked in one of the last 47 EVH threads last week, what exactly does one do when they finally nail the tone?? Play Janine's Crying? maybe Panama?? smoke a cig while taking a nice celebratory dump??
I agree…kinda

It’s fun to try and match and several guys have absolutely nailed it…sometimes with slightly different setups which shows it’s not something unobtainable.

When I try to nail tones it’s more about being able to us the tones to play a certain way. If someone got close to early VH they’d be able to cover almost any rock stuff over several decades. Same with the Green Day tones. I bet several players in this thread could get killer VH stuff with the dookie mod circuit especially VH live.

Heard that Eddie played those smoking hot vh1 licks thru one of these..

the suhr SL68 clip with Al is cool because he plays exceptionally well in the VH style and the amp does capture that saggy plexi smear i hear as part of Eddie’s early tone.

this clip i made of Victor at the plexi palace on his mojave peacemaker proto 17 years ago still does the trick for me, covering the chirpy pick attack and string to string clarity while still achieving some sponge and low end cab resonance.
You just described what makes a Plexi different from the 2203 circuit and even the Jose circuit. Even though Victor did have an extra gain stage pushing the front of the stock plexi circuit he kept it reasonable and not a total gained out metal machine is was a great representation of a modern plexi amp, I guess the SL68, Germino and Friedman Plex fill those spots now.

I don't know why so many people seemed to dislike their Peacemakers when the got them back in the day? I thought they sounded great.

In response to your Thorny Bray clip I think the Marshall SV20 does a better job of getting the plexi tone over the Bray. The Bray is tighter with no give and certainly has more gain. Gain does not make tone and the SV20 in this clip is variaced and has the sweeter nuances of a traditional plexi. Just about anyone could make either tones work and they both sound good but the variaced SV20 just has that little bit extra that I prefer. That's too bad that the Bray 4550 Bray built for you was a crappy amp, alot of people love them and get some killer VH tones with them.

Here's what the guy said he used in the comments section for the video below.
Recipe is as follows:#Marshall #SV20H (at 8ohm) all knobs on 10 with JJ 6CA7's and an 80$ variac from Amazon. EVH 412 Cabinet with #Celestion G12 EVH SpeakersPedalboard:#MXR Custom Shop 74' Phase 90#EVH Flanger (EVH switch on)EVH Chorus (buffer on; pedal set at unity gain)#Danelectro Reel Echo(330ms)#Boss #DM-2w (I use it for the dive on Eruption sometimes, but really I just use it as an output buffer)

SO much this.

The gain structure on each track is unique from every other track on the early records.

You had Donn Landee in there tweaking the Neve 1073 mic pre's, and running line-outs directly into the board, blending signals.
The first song on each side of the album had a different tone to me. Runnin with and Jamie’s Cryin. And that Destroyer had a different tone than the Franky. The Destroyer is the one that had the rhythm tone of the gods.

But both guitars still(sound) had the edge and distortion that were equal sounding if you know what I’m saying.
That's because of the similar specs of those two pickups.

Super70 : 8.8kΩ, A8 mag
PAF in strat : 8.8kΩ, A2 (or A5) magnet

Jesus fucking Christ…….

At least i'm not the only one who wants to pull their hair out because of the 63 EVH threads every week

Literally all it is, is a nice superlead or plexi, greenbacks, PAF pickup in a 25.5 scale guitar, a 57. a 1073 plug in of some kind, and depending on how much of a bitch picker you are, an echo plex type clean boost

I've gotten extremely close just with shit I have laying around, and I can't stand van halen lmfao

I think I kept my "you really got me" profile from when my cover band did it, and it's really close

It's not a 2203, it's not a Jose mod, and it's not even a mystery - the real debate is how much percentage wise the 6CA7s affect the tone. I've heard both, and it seems like you can get 95% there without them.

i know myself and others a few times now have asked for a separate EVH forum cause its just out of hand, and the answer is no becaue other people will want subforums for their favorite band too, which seems silly to me but ok :dunno:

we've tried, makes sense to me to have all the eddie threads in one spot for easy recalls lol

And honestly for those of us who don't care about that one time eddie had a bowel movement after some indian food in 77 and are sick to death of covering the same god damn ground about his gear

We could more easily avoid it

I don't begrudge anyone else what they're into but jesus christ man its obnoxious at a certain point
