What am I doing incorrectly here?

So I got this little boss GT 1effects processor. I got some great tones coming out of it through my headphones. a guy on YouTube Has the exact same unit and uses theUSB port into a little mixer and out from the mixer into the lightning cable of his iPad and use the camera record. …and it sounded amazing. I have a dongle thing here that does the same thing obviously it’s not a mixer but nothing happens so the question is do I need one of those little mixers ?

Could it be that you need to download drivers that tell the computer what the unit is / that it's there / handle the I/O channel stuff?

Back in the day I remember that L6 gear required drivers be installed on the 'puter for this very reason.

I own a Boss GT-1, the software is for Mac/Windows based PCs. Not mobile devices like tablets and phones.

Yes, I haven’t owned a laptop or computer in years. Just iPad.
