What gauge speaker cable for 100 watts? 50 watts? 20 watts? etc ...

I am hooking up a 4x4 de Lisle speaker switch and was wondering what size cable should I be using? I have this one way-too-long cable that's 12ga and that seems to be overkill. Is there a general rule that you follow for speaker cable?

Most use 18 gauge for speaker wire. I am using 10 right now which is a.pain in the ass. But supposedly more bass..may be snake oil. But 18 gauge would be lowest that you should use
