What is the safest way to trade used items?

Hi guys

I have been trying to buy a used instrument from rig-talk for the past few days. I have almost reached an agreement with the seller but I have decided to hold off on sending the money. His rig-talk profile states that he is from a state in the US but the area he tells me to come pick up the instrument is in a different state. He contacted me via whatsapp but whatsapp shows me his Swedish phone number. I have asked him for additional pictures of the items but he has not sent them to me yet. I can confirm on his profile page that he has been a member of rig-talk for over 10 years. He says he will not accept paypal g&s. I think what I am going through is close to abnormal but I can't say for sure that he is scamming me. I would like to know if there is a way to trade that will guarantee both my safety and the safety of the seller.

I backed out of a deal that smelled fishy several years ago. No regrets on passing. Better safe than sorry. I'd pass on that. Abstain from your desires, do not let them blind your good judgement.

If I didn't know the person well, I'd have to meet in person and check out the gear; I'd expect someone serious about a trade would want to do the same.

If not, it's likely a scam.

I also have concealed carry in case there are other motives.

safest way is locally. That said, with 2 factor auth, it seems RT classifieds is pretty good. If they have no history, I wouldn't play games. Anything shady, I would bail, no sense taking a risk. There are plenty of sellers here with 10+ years of good transactions that they can back up.
