I am going to order some power tubes to try out in my MOD50.

I have always really dug SED 6L6's, btu thought I would ask to see what folks are getting good experience from.

I play almost exclusively high gain metal.

I do use cleans (my favorites are bassman type cleans followed closely by Roland JC120), btu really only to make the heavy stuff sound more badass

Reccomend away please!

Thanks.
Tony

Using the stock 5881s,,,,,the JJ 6v6 is killer though :D

The TS 5881s are smoother than the regular Sovtek 5881 and have less in the bottom...might be closer to a real 5881 rather than a 6L6 hybrid?

I'm running a pair of KT-88s in my Randall RM....so huge sounding...just haven't tried in the MOD50 'coz I don't wanna remove the tube retainers :D

You have to remove the tube retainers? Is that tough and reversible?

EL34s are still my favorite in the MOD50s! Nothing gives me that thick crunch and punch like EL34s!
SED Winger C and Ruby/TAD.

Well, Here are the power tubes I will have within the next several days to experiment with:

Sovtek 5881WXT's

Tungsol EL34B's

Tung Sol 5881's

JJ EL34's

SHould be a good start I think

I use the TungSol and Svetlana 6550s in my Mod50 and VHT 2/90/2 with STELLAR results. I have a clip on the Egnater Clip Collective that has the EG5 w/ the VHT 2/90/2 and Svetlana 6550's. Every module sounds SUPERB through the 6550s. Great tubes for an Egnater.

I'm definitely a metal guy myself and the JJ KT77's are perfect for me. They're somewhere between a 6L6 and an E34L which works great with the different modules calling for one or the other. Definitely keeps the balls with the ERECT module but still manages to sing/thrash with an EG5 or SL2. Also, paired with the Twin/Vox module, the sound is similar to a Roland JC-120 to me.

I'm using a Mesa 2:100, which could make quite a difference but the tubes are cheap if you want to try them out.

I probably will try 77's at some point in the Eggy, but I am a little biased against them because I tried them in several amps when they were getting all the hype a while back and didn't care for the in any amp.

Classic rock to Metal...for me it is always EL34s! Nothing is thicker.

I had KT77's in a Voodoo Amps V-Rock that I owned awhile back, and I didn't like them either. They had a harsh grindy mid-range that just hurt my ears every time I played that amp. I put 6550's in it, and it sounded awesome ;). I've never been a 6L6 fan, but the 5881s from Tung Sol are a great choice for the Mod50. I really like EL34's for distortion tones, but never liked them for cleans (no sparkle to them IMHO). 6550s really blend a lot of the tones from 34's, 6L6's, etc. Tight thunderous low end. Warm, juicy midrange, and sparkle on the top. Its by far the tube of my choice. Its the dark horse of tubes, that no one really ever tries. I personally couldn't live w/o 6550s. I first tried them in a JCM 800 that was set up to use them (ala Zakk Wylde's setup), and fell in love w/ the power section of the that JCM 800. I had a return added to that amp that would go through the EQ section before hitting the power section, and that became the bar at which every power amp was graded from now on. The only power section that could come close to matching that versatile power section was the VHT. I do miss having my JCM 800 :). But oh well, I've got the Mod50, and its a bad ass power section!!!

I didn't know you could use KT88's in the MOD50

EDIT: Never mind, I just got on the Eggy website and it clearly stateds KT88's can be used.

KT88s sound nothing like 6550's. They have a scooped mid-range (similar to 6L6's) and are not as tight on the low end as 6550s.

6550s are a bigger bottle tube, which has a pretty tight punchy low end, and very buttery, smooth, yet grindy mid-range. The top end of the 6550's are amazing. Clean modules sound awesome, SL type modules are killer (sound similar to a EL34 tone, with more headroom, and more low end and top end). Its an all around great tube, that I have truly fallen in love with. I've not found a tube that sounds as consistent from gig to gig, has the gerth and versatility that they do, and makes all types of modules / preamps, etc sound great.

They do have a higher headroom than EL34s and 6l6's, but that's what I really like about them. They really don't have to be driven really hard to sound awesome. They sound great at all volumes.

Eric

by the way, I do have a clip on the Clip Collective sticky thread where I use 6550's on all the guitar tones to give you an idea of what they can do with the EG5.

Eric :D

I have treid a galzillion tubes haha like Eric I settled on the TS 5881 and TS 6550

My all around tube is the 5881 they do the blues rock thing better than any other tube in the MOD 50 IMO and the can handle high gain rock well too.

I dig the 6550 for cleans (the top end is sumblime too much for bluesy cleans thus the 5881 choice above). I also dig the 6550 for extreeme high gain. They sound amazing for anything metal especially if you plan to push your tone into death, grind, metalcore etc.

Seeing that I am mainly a bluesy swampy rock guy who when i get heavy play more "stoner rock" type metal tones the 5881 are my go to.

Later

Do the 6550's require you to remove the tube retainers like the KT88 does? It's not a big deal (I've done it on my Randall already)..just wondering.

If I put 6550's in my VHT 2-90-2 what do I have to set the bias to? I've always used KT-88's.
