If I put 6550's in my VHT 2-90-2 what do I have to set the bias to? I've always used KT-88's.
it should be 72 mA per side or 36 mA per tube whether you use KT88's or 6550's.

I think.

KT88 - 46mA.

Do the 6550's require you to remove the tube retainers like the KT88 does? It's not a big deal (I've done it on my Randall already)..just wondering.

Yeah you gotta pull the clips at least I can confirm that for the TS 6550's

Difficult? Go back in easily?

Very easily. It's a pair of screws per retainer. Takes 2 minutes.

Well, after experimenting, I ended up with my old faithful:

SED 6L6's

They just feel and sound right to me.

Does anyone know if the Svetlana 6L6's are the same as the SED's?

BTW, I have a spam thread in classifieds selling off my other power tubes.

If you have a chance....try some Ruby EL34 STR's with your MOD....

The Ruby and TADs(similar to the Ruby) are great but seem to add aggression and gain...may not be what you want so they can be limiting.

The SED EL34s, JJ EL34s and EH are all great. GTs and Tung Sol too expensive.

Need some help here guys. I bought some Svetlana 6550's for my VHT 2/90/2. I put them in and I'm trying to bias the amp. My meter reads mV but the post above says mA. What do I set my bias to in mV? Excuse my ignorance here, I'm VERY new to this.

The bias tool I have checks one tube at a time and my meter connects to the tool. I assume I would just adjust the bias to be one half of what is recommended for each pair of tubes by doing it this way?
