What strap locks are worth a damn?

I use Dunlops.

You can put your strap on the button like normal, then put the actual lock mechanism on OVER it. Locks the strap on without bearing the guitar's weight, and keeps the strap closer to the body too.

I just use them like normal.

Well shit....
I use the Dunlop dual design strap locks and do it the normal way. I never thought about putting the strap on like normal then putting the lock over that. I'm going to have to try that now.

Yeah agreed, that sounds like a real good idea but my friend doesn’t really grasp the concept. Could you help me explain it to him with some visuals?

Just tell him to operate it as-normal but without attaching it to a strap.

IOW, push the guitar's "nib" through a strap hole and apply the lock to it.

I use a strap with a locking function made by a Taiwanese company. If you prefer a fabric strap, this may be a good choice.

I also use a thin plastic strap lock. It's simple and cheap.

The older Schallers benefited from a drop on the threads of the nut, in order of preference:

1. Lock tite thread lock
2. Silicone
3. Crazy Glue

With any of those in the threads, the nut never loosens up.

The newer Schaller S-Locks stick out a bit more than the previous generation, but they have benefits of added threads to fit better over thick/leather straps, have a set screw that prevents movement, and the "ramp" of the lock mechanism is angled, making it much smoother to side onto the strap buttons. The strap buttons themselves are slotted for hex wrench & are a single piece combined with the wood screw. Overall significantly better if you don't mind the slightly increased length. I've upgraded most of my guitars except one that had Dunlops.

I have the mentioned older Schallers. It works, but is a little bit bulky for my taste.

I use the newer schallers with the allen key bolt head. They work so well and are completely secure. I've not had one loosen up yet. It is so much easier to fit a thicker strap on them now.

I've always used a pair of pliers to tighten the nut and haven't had a single one loosen yet.

I'm not talking heaps of torque 'cause you want to be able to easily loosen it for future strap adjustments, but enough to be well-beyond what you could do by-hand, which isn't difficult 'cause it's tough to get purchase on such a shallow nut with your fingers.

I use Dimarzio straps with the clips to remove the strap. I’ve never had an issue over the decades.
been using them to scratch the shit out of the bottom of a lot of nice guitars over the years. i love them, but that plastic clip digs at the finish in the same spot.
