What the actual...

I can't see the fb stuff 'cause the site's blocked (by-choice) on my 'puter.

Can someone fill me in and I'll move it if-necessary?

@Monkey Man - what is your aversion to Facebook? Does you clicking on a video embedded here have a threat to download a harmful virus?

Facebook is among the most invasive platforms that exist.
They should be banned, imo.
Just posting that here added 3 trackers, site analytics, and a crawler to this page.
A person doesn't even need to be on there for them to track them across the internet.

I get that Lisa. The way I see it, is that it is a guitar related Reel posted on a guitar related website. Track all you want. There are much more worrisome things to worry about clicking on IMO.

To me it's not just about "track all you want" it's about people not having a choice on whether or not they do. Someone doesn't even need to click that for FB to start tracking them. Only needed to have visited this page, for example. The capabilities allowed and end results of the Patriot Act are less invasive than what FB does by significant orders of magnitude. Short of some unlawful sites, there is pretty much nothing on the internet worse than FB and Co. Perhaps Amazon is their only contender. Google is elementary school in comparison.

The fact that they follow people around the internet and scrape info (not just metadata) without your consent and sell/share with whoever they choose while the only way to actually opt out of it entirely is to literally block their servers (plugins aren't good enough) from your network is disgusting and should be criminal. The resources that have been used to build, host, and power their servers in itself is disgusting. Not even including the harm social media has done to society they are completely unethical and should be done away with.

If a person was actually aware of the extent of what they do, not just what the news tells them, they would not have a nonchalant attitude about it. This isn't conspiracy or paranoia, it's reality. So many things wrong with the internet that people would have revolted in the past, but are just now docile sheep playing with fire. This isn't a go with the flow level issue, imo.

Any pointers for where people can go to learn more? I consider myself fairly up to date on that sorta stuff, at least relatively, but there's still knowledge gaps. E.g., so far I've mostly considered using UBlock Origin to block various domains to be largely sufficient, but it sounds like you're saying it's not and there's more to the picture. I've been meaning to read Tau's Means of Control to hopefully get a better idea, any other suggestions?
