What the actual...

To me it's not just about "track all you want" it's about people not having a choice on whether or not they do. Someone doesn't even need to click that for FB to start tracking them. Only needed to have visited this page, for example. The capabilities allowed and end results of the Patriot Act are less invasive than what FB does by significant orders of magnitude. Short of some unlawful sites, there is pretty much nothing on the internet worse than FB and Co. Perhaps Amazon is their only contender. Google is elementary school in comparison.

The fact that they follow people around the internet and scrape info (not just metadata) without your consent and sell/share with whoever they choose while the only way to actually opt out of it entirely is to literally block their servers (plugins aren't good enough) from your network is disgusting and should be criminal. The resources that have been used to build, host, and power their servers in itself is disgusting. Not even including the harm social media has done to society they are completely unethical and should be done away with.

If a person was actually aware of the extent of what they do, not just what the news tells them, they would not have a nonchalant attitude about it. This isn't conspiracy or paranoia, it's reality. So many things wrong with the internet that people would have revolted in the past, but are just now docile sheep playing with fire. This isn't a go with the flow level issue, imo.
Oh I totally get all of that. Big Data proliferation and now AI means it is probably just going to get worse and worse. I wouldn't call myself a nonchalant sheep. I've sold all kinds of data security products like Zscaler, Cisco, Palo Alto, SecureLogix, etc to fortune 500 companies and have some training in this area. Maybe not as much as you. I just got 23 tracking attempts on Soundcloud and we post shit from there all the time.

Most of my family and friends use Facebook so I do as well. :dunno:

Any pointers for where people can go to learn more? I consider myself fairly up to date on that sorta stuff, at least relatively, but there's still knowledge gaps. E.g., so far I've mostly considered using UBlock Origin to block various domains to be largely sufficient, but it sounds like you're saying it's not and there's more to the picture. I've been meaning to read Tau's Means of Control to hopefully get a better idea, any other suggestions?

RedTeam, 1983BAMN, Allzhatzwelcomeexceptyurz, MAINWAYANCHORYSAWAY, 50SHADESOFBLACKHATS, BOUNDLESSMISINFORMANT, BULLINAPRISMSHOP, 1337&|\|337, Swipe up up down down left right left right, Stellar Winds of Change, etc... Would probably start with monitoring your own traffic if you consider yourself up to date. Would skip using intel cpus from 99-2018. There's lots and lots.

Overall not about tracking, so much as how that information is obtained, used, stored, and distributed.

Yeah ....protect your Facebook privacy. No worries about the US treasury though. 🤣

I'm about the furthest from an expert one could be but I don't think my suggestion is too-bad:

Little Snitch.

Been around for a long time. Trusted. You can pretty-much get as granular as you want to when it comes to blocking incoming and outgoing "stuff" (See, I don't even know what to call it).

@311splawndude to answer your question, see above - to the best of my ability all fb-related stuff is blocked on my 'puter via LS (Little Snitch).

Were we talking about the treasury?
So, if you dislike Hitler; should I assume you endorse Mao or Stalin because you didn't bring them up?

Who does this?

@Monkey Man - this video is of a girlfriend going through her boyfriends gear collection and arbitrarily turning guitar tuning pegs, amp dials, pedal knobs, etc. Messing up all his settings basically.

My wife played this for me.

She said, "Even I know better than that."

"And that's why I married YOU." I replied
