What's a good condition Peavey VTM 60 worth these days?

The Ultra Plus is probably the the best hidden gem of the amp world. It can do a hell of a good impression of an Uberschall. Honestly, mine gets more play than my Uber. It's especially good for downtuned metal.

Can you believe I paid $270 Canadian for this? :cool:

Awesome score on that! I've had several over the years. I buy them, sell them and then want another one. It's a vicious cycle. lol

I've got my eye on Ultra Plus 1/2 stack that's been at a local music store for about 2+ years now. Some guy put it on consignment, and then it developed some kind of issue so they don't want to sell it like that. I've offered several times to buy it "as is" if it was worth the money, but they can't get in contact with the guy to find out what he'd take for it like it sits. He works out of state, and they never hear from him. I ask about it every time I go in there.

Peavey made an Ultra 120 and 60 amps as well too. I thought maybe that's what you had. I don't have very much experience with those though. I think these came between the VTM and Ultra Plus.

I love these! I have the Ultra 120 and the Ultra Plus and they're insanely good in my opinion! I got rid of my 5150 II and kept those, the VTM and 5150 original.

Yeah, no shit. Saw one on Reverb for $895, and Triple XXX's $850 plus shipping, $900, and even one jackass asking $1200. But, they're all sitting. If jackasses pay it, other jackasses ask it. That's the cycle..And keep pushing the envelope.

XXX's used to be a dime a dozen for $400-$500, maybe even $600. I've been looking for one, but I picked up a Laney because I refuse to pay that kinda money for a Triple XXX.
 
No I don't think $800 is a fair price. I just paid $800 for a NOS VTM120 that had the stock tubes, cover & manual. The best condition you could possibly get one of these amps in. Even as someone who paid $800 for a VTM120, I think a fair price for that amp is going to be closer to $600. I feel like I might have actually hyped the market with my purchase on reverb because I saw a jump after I pulled the trigger. I don't think you can see in the Reverb charts how good of a condition the one I bought, it was an outlier. So people just think "hey these are going to the moon." Now is sucker time, but I'll never sell another amp on Reverb again. It's a total mess to sell amps on there.

Reverb prices are a mirage. People stopped going to pawn shops. Go to inner city pawn shops, you will be shocked at what you find.

I'm okay paying a premium for unobtainium. But yeah for sig\block 5150s that's where I'd be shopping. Most music shops have just moved onto Reverb though. They'll sell it minus shipping and 10% in store. Then bitch on the forums when a customer destroys their amp and they pay to have a pile of parts shipped back to them. Reverb has definately fucked up the gear market. Reminds me of zestimates\redfin estimates on houses. It's all self reinforcing, up up up up and away!

What tubes came in it?
 
Not that long ago I sold my excellent condition VTM60 with the dipswitch cover to a local guy that I had bought and sold a few amps from before for $600. I also included the pair of original power tubes separately. They were matched within 1 ma if each other. To me, that was a fair "I don't really want to sell it, but I will" price. He has since sold it and I was super tempted to buy it back.

Did the VTM60 have more "bark" to it than the 120? Been sort of thinking of grabbing a 60 too since Fortin did the Cali in 50w for the "Meshuggah" amp (has since been unmasked as a Jose 50w el34 plexi with almost nothing otherwise done to it).
 
I had a VTM 120 or 60 (can't remember, it was like 12-15 years ago). Great amp but holy shit that thing weighed a ton. The headshell was an achor. I can't remember specifically which band it was but I think some hardcore band talked the amps up and then all the hardcore dudes started buying them up and the prices spiked hard. I picked mine up for $225 or $250 and sold it for $600 with replies coming in the moment it was on craigslist.

Also really liked the Ultra Plus but mine had this weird issue where the footswitching / channel switching was slightly delayed and it was a deal breaker for me at the time - was playing in a band where we did a lot of switching back and forth between clean / high gain at the drop of a dime and the delay was just a little too long.
 
MGR in Kenosha, WI had a VTM-120 for $599 that I was really considering going to snag but I just checked and it looks like it has sold. Visually seemed to be in VGC.

I had a VTM-60 that sat on CL for months back in 2014-ish that finally went for $200 IIRC.

They are such great amps. I wish I had not sold it but space was an issue and I already had 2 or 3 other heads by then.

I always thought the big issue with these amps was the way too thick/big headshell. too damn heavy

I did end up getting a new guy. Well regarded guy in the Seattle area scene, but literally turned away every single thing I ever tried to bring him except for one amp. Was literally opposed to working on anything that wasn't P2P. Great guy, knows his shit, fun to talk to, but very particular for business. Like a lot of guys, he hated charging bench fees and so tailored his business around not charging bench fees which didn't really help him in the end IMO. I would rather pay someone who knows what they're doing to charge me $80 for a bench fee to say he can't fix it and take it to a whoever specialist or find a new board than have someone hack up an amp for $40.
