What's a good pickup for basswood?

you not get any cock today? quit acting like a cunt, your not on HCAF.

You're not on HC either, so why recommend the highest output pickup Dimarzio makes to a guy who said "I need med gain/80's metal ... I don;t need something super hot". With HC it makes sense; someone asks for a pickup well suited to AC/DC and people go off screaming "Nailbomb!" and "EMG!" :) Anyway yeah, you earned that ribbing, my friend.

To be honest if that guitar is dead sounding he just may need an Evo, plain and simple.

Dual Sound, Super 2, Super 3, Super Distortion, X2N, and D-Activator are all hotter than the Evo....

Well, the guy never mentioned a lack of acoustic ring, he just didn't want a super high output pickup. I just found it funny that the first suggestion was one of the highest Dimarzio offer.[/quote]

the first thing I thought of when basswood was mentioned was ibanez and evo's and Vai. Not really sure about the output rating. on Vai's sig pickup, I would not assume super high output. Vai's tone to me is smooth medium gain type of sound. it's all good though. If I ever go to the U.K., I'll lick your taint, mate.

I've got a Norton in my RG1820....it's med output and pretty open sounding. I had a Breed in there before that, its less gainy than the Breed. I may end up putting the Breed back in it though...kinda cool pup.

it's all good james. i shoulda explained my suggestion. besides I read chud's post before I had my coffee-and as you can tell, I'm not a morning person. sorry for the hijacks j.c.! and for the record-I still think the evo would work.

I thought Vai used Breeds with Basswood and Evos with Alder?

Yeah the breeds are a smoother much more vintage sounding pickup.
Infact, I'd probably suggest that. Those pickups are awsome for leads.

I second the Dimarzio Super Distortion. Lots of output but still feels very responsive/not "deathed out", with a great balance of warmth/fullness and articulation (still somewhat vintage sounding despite its high output), and cleans up well.

James, I don't know if you have used a Duncan Custom SH-5 before, but if so, how does the Custom compare to the Super Distortion? Especially in the area of note definition and articulation. From what I understand the Custom it tighter and more defined, particularly in the low end.

*Also, how much would you charge me for your new "kitty-cat" mod?

Since when were Evos hotter than the X2N or the Super Distortion?

The Evo is hotter than the Super Distortion or at least it feels that way because it's more aggressive and less "natural" sounding than the Super Distortion. (I've used both in the same guitars, at least 6 different guitars but I lost count...) The Super Distortion sounds/feels more like it has an A5 magnet (even though it has a ceramic magnet) and the Evo really does sound/feel like it has a ceramic.

The X2N is on the same level in terms of aggression as the Evo, but more clear and less thick.

Anyway it's true that the Evolution might work well in the guitar. For that matter who'd have known that the Humbucker From Hell would be the bridge pickup of choice for a certain hollowbody Ibanez a friend of mine owned. After having tried about a dozen pickups in the guitar, that one magically worked best and sounded thick too (something that surprised even me after hearing each pickup in the guitar and having no indication that it would act that way with that pickup). But the Evo would be pretty far down the list of pickups I'd try for the sounds the OP wants, in any guitar at all. It'd be more of a last resort pickup to me, and if the guitar sounded really dead there's no fixing it with a hotter pickup anyway; it's just not the same. The guitar would be for sale. :)

That kitty cat is a custom design for me only. :)

The Custom is tighter and more defined/clearer through the frequency range. It's also more percussive on the attack. I'd choose it for more aggressive metal; it's actually my #1 choice for more aggressive metal while still sounding fairly natural (I try not to recommend pickups which sound "forced" or "too colored", since I still like hearing the guitar's characteristics as much as I can). The Super Distortion is more warm and has more bounce in the attack while still having very good focus, so it's more friendly to less aggressive styles of playing (I can use it for classic OD or for metal without feeling like I'm sacrificing in either area).

Cool, thanks for the feedback. I think I'll go ahead and give the Custom a try then.
