Sounds very distinctive and jangly. Rickenbacker? The Ripley Stereo guitar? Been bugging me for ages!

I play that song in my band find that using position 2 (split bridge and middle) type of strat pickup config with a lot of gain gets me pretty close. It does seem to have a single coil thing to me.

The guitars for that song were cut with a Strat with the exception of the solo...

Yep, I had always heard (and read) that it was a strat.

Yeah, I thought it might have been a Strat, but knowing Eddie and his fondness for weird guitars I thought it might have been different.

I'm really coming round to the Hagar stuff. The FUCK album is particularly awesome!

I've been on a big Van Hagar kick lately. His playing is just on fire on 5150. F.U.C.K. has always been my personal favorite VH album.

Even Balance has some pretty decent stuff on it. 0U812 is the weakest probably, but Source of Infection and Black n' Blue are killer tunes! Not really digging all the chorus he started using, took the rawness out a bit...

I like 5150 as best Sammy era VH, followed by FUCK. "Summer Nights" always reminds me of how I thought DLR should have been singing that - just his kinda tune.

Sad that they don't do ANY Sammy era stuff on tour.

I think it's an original '57 Strat that he used. But, as all else have said, definitely a strat. Same thing
with 5150 rhythm guitars - Strat.

I remember being blown away when I first read about it. Then it made so much sense when I went back to listen to the
songs again. It was always one of my favorite tones on the record and I was chasing the humbucker sound when it
was really single coils.

I'd like to get a gander of the prototype Steinberger he used on Pleasure Dome, though. Almost an EVH signature Steiny.

I never realized it was a Strat - I figured it was some FX Chorus delay thing, making his humbucker equipped guitar sound like a Strat. Or, I thought it was the Rippley stereo guitar.

If you listen to Blood and Fire on the new album, he gets that same stereo Strat type sound. Strat, or Rippley??

Steinberger thru SLO would be my guess ...

Pretty sure he was still using Marshalls during the 5150 era. He would have recorded that album in '85.

You can clearly hear the SLO's that he used on the F.U.C.K. album .

I agree completely. By 1991, he was definitely using them. I think he started with them probably shortly after OU812.
