When's the last time you broke a string?

I’m left handed but play right handed. I’ve always had a heavy left hand. I used to play 9-42 in Eb when I first started out and that was when I broke strings all of the time. I jumped up in gauges ages ago to help prevent it too and never went back.

The 12-60 isn’t so bad. The hardest part to get used to is the 24 gauge solid core G string (I hate wound G’s)
Dino Cazares used 11-50 for B standard on Demanufacture

Oddly I break the D string most often on one particular guitar. Maybe it’s a burr in the D string saddle?
IME wound strings are always E and D breaks. E because it takes the full force of a downstroke and D because it's the thinnest wound string.

If I don't replace my high E before every show I risk a break during my set, so I always put a new one on before a gig. I haven't broke a string in a long time that way. I'll replace the B and G every five or six shows to avoid the same thing.

I'm a bassist. I've been playing the same strings for 20 years and they haven't broke yet. I just boil them in oil and they're good as new.

When i used to play 9's , i broke the high e string every now and then but since changing to 10's about 6 years ago.....never broke a string yet.

Couple days ago. Break them all the time. But I play really hard and do alot of extreme bends, vibrato and floyd flingin! So maybe I need to stop playing ghs boomers? IDK!!

Years ago I used to break my A string all the time on my main guitar. Eventually got tired of it and, assuming it was a burr, I took the last broken A string and rubbed it around in that slot pretty hard a few times. Hasn’t broken since. I guess it was a burr after all.

Aside from that, I can’t remember the last time.

I've been using Ernie Ball slinky 9 gauge for the last 20 years at least and can't remember the last time I broke a string playing. 99% of my guitars are TOM or other hardtail and I don't do much extreme bending or anything. So as long as there are no burrs anywhere I'm good to go.

I did break a couple a few month back doing a setup on my friend's guitar. He has an old Ibanez RG with a Floyd trem. Instead of cutting the ball end off I did that thing where you feed the string through the tuners so the ball is up there. It didn't take long for me to remember why I stopped doing it that way on my few Floyd guitars. A couple of strings got caught up on their on windings and popped when tuning up.

Fuck. I must be doing something wrong… I’ll go back the the drawing board on pick attack or something.

I broke a .024 a few weeks ago while doing a setup, obviously defective. Playing I have not broken a string in decades.

I also use the 12-56 set and if I can’t get the pack with the solid core G string I’ve been known to swap out the wound G for a 22 as well.

Also how in the world do you do 12-60 tuned to B? I’d have to go to 13’s. 12’s in C# feel just right but start to feel loose to me in C/drop B.
maybe its how my guitar is set up, idk. its a 24.75" scale length. they feel to have around the same tension as a set of 10-46's tuned standard.

In da 80's i played w/ stainless steel picks. The D string usually the first to go.
Nowdays if working on a guitar and detune the high E more than 5 or 6 times its toast.
In da 80's i was so poor i would tie a knot in the string that broke and keep playing.

It was when I was re-stringing an old cheap POS acoustic for a friend about 8 months ago- high E snapped just trying to get the fucker in tune lol

Luckily I had another string and managed to get that one properly tuned up but the guitar played like absolute ass so I suspect it hasn't seen much use since then lmao

For me personally it's been quite a few years - haven't broken one since I stopped playing in bands

I broke an A string on my Danocaster at a gig on Monday night. First one in quite a while.

There were a few years where I led the league in broken strings, but my gear's gotten better so it happens less frequently now.

Its rare even with all the Floyd abuse....but since I posted in this thread ....⏳
