I have dreams. I tell my wife, the time is now to GTFO of the northeast. The thing is, if you're not motivated as fuck, 10 years goes by in a flash.
Tired of fucking snow and winter. 6 months no sun.
Where to go?
North Carlolina - Same fucking weather, unless you're in the southern portion right? People problem as well.
I'm thinking rural southern TN. I do better around rednecks.
Costa Rica? Bugs don't die in the winter like MA, they keep growing. I'd need the most advanced bug killing system on the planet to life there. Fucking hate bugs.

If you hated Winter, and the lack of sun, and freezing your ass off for 6 months, where would you go?

I'm looking at Russia or maybe Montenegro, except Montenegro is becoming a dumping ground for western tourist trash while Russia is going all in on an Orthodox Christian revival. St. Petersburg is cold but there is a good arts scene there. Russia is rolling out a welcome mat to westerners tired of the woke. I mean, yesterday I had some supposed conservative here on the forum mad cause I mentioned a few bible verses. There are very few actual conservatives left in the west. Satan's garbage can....

I have many friends (former co-workers) in Rostov and some in Moscow. But man, no fucking sun and every picture I see from there is fucking snow, so I'm out. It's like England on steroids + Endless snow

Southern Florida, somewhere out-of-town where I can dig a crapload of big fishponds and get into some serious breeding.

I know it's hot all-year-'round there and most peeps would at least want to head to the northern parts where winter provides some relief, but hey, up there they need to bring the fish indoors for the colder months, not something I'd wish on anyone who's runnin' a shedload of massive ditches.

Wife is always hot as fuck. I told her Florida and I'd buy one 4 these

I'm getting so tired of the mindset here I'm willing to contemplate life in the cold, again. It's like an infection, even in Texas. I can't go to a local pub show without someone preaching their dumb politics at me. I was watching videos of young kids in St. Petersburg playing better blues guitar than some of these losers around Austin. I'm thinking that after my parents are dead, or my old man at least, about making a move. I'm sick of it here the way you are sick of it there. Except I've lived in half a dozen US states and they are all starting to look like shit to me now.

I lived around St. Pete FL for about a dozen years. There is a lot to love. But there is a lot not to.

The weather rules, especially this time of year. The people are the most unpredictable of any state. You could have a night out on the town and wind up partying with a multi millionaire or the next Charles Manson. It's very free wheeling. I like that. Opening up your silverware drawer to roaches is kinda gross. Gotta have the place sprayed regularly. No one is motivated there. People come down from the east coast, party their asses off living the beach life, burn out on booze and sun, and then leave. Nobody is from Florida. Mega-transient. Then you have the storms, and I don't just mean name hurricanes. I've seen afternoon squalls blow down walls. There are a lot of pedophiles and creeps in FL

My ears couldn't take the humidity. Constant ear infections. And no motivated people, meaning musicians. There is no git-r-done there. My sisters house is a wreck from Helene. I need to call and find out if they are gonna let her rebuild without spending 200k to put it on stilts. I should mention south FL building codes. Navigate that mess if you want to build your own. Inspectors who disagree with other inspectors. Makes no sense cause then people just toss trailers up on their property which are probably worse for storms than a crappy self-built house.

Electricity. My old man pays about $350/mo to cool 1600-1700 sq ft.
Yeah my bill is like $450 a month and my house is not much bigger. Yeah I forgot about the hurricane thing. My fear is a tsunami.
With 1,350 miles of coastline, every Florida resident is no more than 60 miles from the ocean. Floridians are already experiencing the impacts of sea level rise on a daily basis in the form of more damaging king tides, deeper saltwater intrusion into aquifers and more frequent flooding.

Yeah I've been watching a ton of videos of new houses in Texas. Absolute horror shows of new construction. I'd have to camp on site if I built a house, I got lucky with this house in 2002 when it was built, the framing was top notch, but inadequate insulation, I can put my face near an electrical outlet in January and get frost on my chin. My house is high up and the Wind coming down from the North and west blows on the back of my house and gives me mild anxiety. I have pipes freeze almost every winter. I had to get the town involved to get the builder to replace a garage floor that sunk and cracked 2 months in because it was improperly compacted, tiles cracked because of improper heat during insulation in February. If you build a house, I would advise having a home inspector on site during the whole build, even if it costs you tons of money. I wired my whole house with ethernet and the stupid fucking drywallers covered all the jacks in the living room. I ripped down all the drywall and the builder was pissed. Guy hated me. Typical POFS developer.

Can't live life in fear except fear of the Lord, that's a commandment.....

If you are concerned about tsunamis and water intrusion then North Florida, north of Ocala might be a good place look at. Higher ground. Live Oak, places like that. Country people, conservative, old school. Farms and horses. Anything west of US19 is swampland. Stay off the waterways AND inland lakes. Unfortunately the best of FL is to be found on or near the water. Beautiful sunsets on the west coast. A more cosmopolitan feel. The nature coast is nice but VERY storm prone. Cooling sea breezes every afternoon. North Florida is more like Alabama or Georgia. Much more affordable to. But it might pay to look instead at southern Alabama. Lowest property taxes next to Hawaii. Cheap housing. Land. And power is cheaper in those places. They nail you in FL.

If you want to self contract it's easy to do in TX (NOT IN FL) if you get away from the city. And you can def camp on-site. RV, single wide, tent, it don't matter. I didn't pull a single permit here in Hays county. I ordered boards and started hammering nails. That's changed here now. I'd suggest looking out near Blanco. Your wife would probably like Fredericksburg. If you want to be closer to the city then New Braunfels. Comal county is conservative but they will bust your ass for smoking weed and they got the no-refusal blood draw 24/7 if they think you been drinking and driving. New Braunfels is growing at a rate of about 10 percent a year, faster than anywhere in TX. People are friendly there though. Real friendly. And there is good money compared to the rest of the south, but not the money you're used to. Plenty of night life. Great rivers to go tubing, fishing, or just hang out at. Hays/Comal are actually still conservative but they allowed students to vote in Hays. TSU. And now it's blue. Comal is the holdout on the I-35 line. HEAVY law enforcement out around Canyon Lake area, west of New Braunfels.

TX-FL are where I've spent most of the last 20+ years so any question you got I'm glad to help Bill. Ask away bro.

Thanks man, TX always interested me as well as southern Alabama. Watching Landman now with the wife at night and love the fact that there's no trees which = ZERO Leaves, but in place of leaves is Dust. Can't win on this planet.

Hey you are welcome Bill. I know you've really been looking for a long time. Texas is really dusty and in Florida the sand is pervasive, it gets everywhere. You will find very few people in FL have carpet for that reason. Plus tile and terrazzo is cooler to the touch. If you buy property in FL you find that there are huge moths, large bugs, roaches, and tons of mosquitoes in the woods, it's kinda nasty. Never mind the gators. Pretty much why the Seminoles were never conquered. The only unconquered tribe. Now they conquer people's wallets over at Hard Rock Tampa.

I was raised in Chattanooga, TN and about a year and a half ago went to Bangor, ME....so the great white northeast. Then recently, I moved back home, but to Crossville, TN. I'm about an hour and a half north of Chattanooga now, 2 hours directly east of Nashville. The south is a great place to live, but sometimes the heat and humidity is insane.

Matt, how did you like Maine?

How does sand get in your house? People not taking their shoes off, or wind?
Bugs are a problem for me. I'm more worried about bugs than gators.

Once I retire, I plan to take time to explore a few countries in Asia and the Caribbean.

If my health is good, and I go ahead and get a bluewater sailboat, I'll stay here or move closer to the Caribbean, and spend part of each year sailing the Caribbean; otherwise, I'll stay here, and live part of each year in Asia.

Second citizenship is a hassle, even if I take one of the less expensive options; some countries have expanded their tourist and retiree visas, and even visa-free durations for US citizens. One country allows you to stay visa-free for up to 30 days; if you leave for a weekend and return, that 30-day counter resets.

I plan to make my final, big move in my investments before the end of January-2025, if the market is right. If the market stays right then by December, 2025, I should be ready to retire in early 2026.

Shoes, wind. Go to the beach and now it's in your car's carpet forever. FOR-EV-ER.

That the tropics. Roaches galore. Even if you have monthly spraying you'll have the occasional roach.

LOL @ Carpet comment. I tell my wife, when she goes to the beach to put a tarp in the back of the SUV, which she never does, then the sucka has to try to vacuum up the sand. Guess who the sucka is?

I told her, if we go to the beach, get a rental :D

Id love to GTFO out Long Island and NY

problem is where do you go to solve the congestion problem.

the southern states are full of Northern transplants.. Traffic is just as fucked up. RE is skyrocketing

In my studies i found you need to get away from the 2 coasts and move inland and away from any major city.

I cant go too far inland because of my accent. they will all think i'm in the witness protection program.

was thinking of eastern Ohio area

You want no congestion and wide open spaces, mountains without tourists, you look at West Texas. Take a look at the Big Bend area. Alpine, Marfa, Terlingua, Balmorrhea. Brewster county is bigger than some states.....
