Please allow me to chime in on such a late stage, I only saw the thread now.
I had for years a pre-2012 Savage, could have even be pre-1996, and was not happy at all with it, because I never could dial in the "balls" I was looking for. In my view this amp lacked in high gain mode completely in low end and in clean modus, it had not enough headroom. Fyi I play melodic death metal, and was completely drowned during years by the Diezel VH4 of my bandmate.
I think the issue with my savage was, that it had only 2 power tubes, whereas the actual ones have 4 power tubes. When I played once a newer savage with the 4 power tubes, I found everything that I had missed in the older version (which also had black corners instead of the actual chrome ones).
