which is better for metal peavey 6505 or mesa dual rectifier

yeah I've had both and I liked them because they both brought something different to the table, but in the end it was the faster attack and articulation of the 5150 that won out. for fast playing the mesa got messy, and while they both had a wicked chug, the 5150 felt more immediate, tighter and focused.

I didn't bother reading all the posts to this thread - I'm just reading the subject title, and my reply is without a doubt:

Dualy

Mojo

Recto hands down. Has a much more lively rich and organic tube sound to it. Is insanely brutal and just pummels you in the gut with low end.

I just think its a more toneful amp with a lot more Character. I am not a huge fan of the 5150/6505 it excels at metal very well and tons of people use them but for me I love a recto

woah, HCAF flashback.

I personally haven't liked either amp in person, however I'd say going by the tone the amps have put down on studio albums from all the metal bands.

5150/6505 wins it for me.

i prefer the rec when it is boosted. the 6505 isnt bad though. go give em a try somewhere and decide for yourself.

As someone said earlier, it's all about what the player prefers. I personally tend to gravitate towards the Mesa, but it depends if you're talking the 2 or 3 channel Rectifier. The 2 channel Recto just kills for that massive bottom end, where as the Peavy as someone pointed out is good for one thing, but then again that is my humble opinion. Best thing is to try out both amps and see where it takes, of course it also depends on what style of metal you're rocking, what cabs, what speakers, what pickups, what guitar, etc. That in it's self is a whole other can of worms!

both are awesome for metal...i used to own a 5150 and it was amazing. not just for metal though, you CAN play other things on it. might not be the best but it works great for hard rock. as for the Recto, it has a thick, chunky tone that is awesome for rhythms. but i cant get along with it for leads. boosted its amazing, but i absolutely hate using pedals. im a straight into the amp guy...and the Recto has a great tone. just not MY tone. i prefer the feel and tone of the Peaveys.

and i just got my Ultra Plus and i was instantly blown away. no contest, but Peaveys do it for me. I really love my Mesa, but i love the Peavey more.

Okay so it has been mentioned in this thread that the boosted recto sounds good.
So the question is which boost to run in front of the recto ?

OCD is the best I've had so far. I decided to go without boost with my Roadster after a long time going back and forth. I find something glorious about the depth and girth of the sound when it's unboosted, plus, you can get some pretty killer lead sounds if you tweak right!

Boosted recto. Again more versatile, and rich sounding amp. Orange cloned to modern and boosted is just a ripping metal tone!!!!

I agree.

Over the years I've tried using various boosts (best for me was the Maxon OD808), and while I understand why people love the boosted sound I prefer the deeper, more 3D response (sag) I get unboosted.

The tracking speed of a Recto has never been an issue for me. It seems I can very the response of the amp by changing my picking/muting technique, which has always been one of my favorite things about the Recto... and why I find some of the other high gainers I've used to be flat and boring.

Oddly, I've never played through a 5150 so I can't directly comment. Although I do really like the sound of them when others play through them.

I have a 6505+. I owned a recto for 8 years and played it exclusively. The deal breaker for me is lead tones. The dual rec is great for alot of things but playing leads on that amp was near impossible for me. I like to shred a bit and it just wasn't happening for me. I converted to a Splawn Nitro in 2008 and never looked back.

I picked up a 6505+ as a backup about 2 years ago and that amp has made me question why anyone would ever buy a boutique amp. I like the 6505 that much. Tons of gain, sustain and just rocks. I wish it had a solo boost like the DR. The DR features blow the 6505 away but for the money its 6505 anyday without hesitation.

I've owned both, both were good - sound good together in a 2 guitar band

Almost identical to my amp story!
Started with a Single Recto- great for rhythms but got kinda slushy on leads (although that could've been my sloppy play too!).
Went through a series of boutique amps and now have a Splawn QR and 6505+ as my back up. Couldn't be happier!
Although I play more hard rock/classic metal than modern metal. Really impressed with the versatility of the 6505+.

Not sure between those two, both are good choices.

I'll agree with whomever posted "both" earlier in the thread.

i'm here late. They are both so awesome. I personally like the 5150 signature the best, and out of all my rectos, the third revision is my fav. you hardly need a mason with that one. the 5150 is more brutal to me and the recto is more smooth, and more fizzy.
