Hi guys, I've been toying with the idea of getting Marshall-ish sounding amp to complement my VH4, so that I have both the modern 6L6 sound and the classic crunch sound. I've been thinking about the following amps, because they sound great and can be found reasonably priced on ebay (I just got out-bid on a Zakk Wylde 2203, which is why I have to ask, grrrrrrr....). I don't have enough for Bogner unfortunately, or I'd toss one of those in too.

1. Marshall Silver Jubillee 25/50 or Slash model w/EL34s
2. Marshall JCM 800 2204 w/6550s and vertical inputs (a 2203, unless a Zakk model, is way too much power)
3. Peavey JSX w/EL34s
4. Mesa Stiletto w/EL34s

Thanks for the advice in advance!

I love the high gain midrange voiced crunch that I get with my JSX. Even though it's loaded with EL34's, it sounds HUGE. I was shopping for a Marshall myself, but the JSX just ate them up.

Peavey XXX kicks the JSX's ass big time imho.

With the price of a Jubilee, you'd be able to get a used shiva.

Peavey XXX kicks the JSX's ass big time imho.
I find the XXX to be thinner, colder and more buzzy sounding. Both are great amps though.

I'd go for something of more a plexi flavor with a master volume added.

2204 thats where its at for me,I have a master volume plexi and it's great, but the 800 f#@kin rocks, here is a clip of mine being pushed with a crank planker, it has el34's in it, the 6550's are to cold sounding for me

How about a Top Hat Emplexador? The older models can usually be had for around $1000.00(there's a nice looking one on ebay right now-no affiliation) and the newer MKII can be found for less than $2000.00 used. A veritable Marshall encyclopedia with the best (IMHO) MV out there.

I absolutely love my Emplex MKII and it CAN do metal, especially when nailing it with a nice OD in the overdrive channel! I prefer to stack an OCD into an Eternity for my high gain tones. Just roll off the volume knob on your guitar for very sweet cleans.

The classic channel is pure Plexi bliss easily covering a JTM 45 to a JMP 50 in spades!

No it's not the most metal looking amp, but the Marshall tones you can coax out of these amps is just amazing! The build quality is second to none as well! I doubt it gets much talk around here and that's a shame because it really does deliver the goods at bedroom to gigging volumes! Check one out! :)

BTW, I've been lurking here for some time and I really dig this place! Perfect blend of OT and Gear threads with none of the Gestapo like moderators or 100 page threads on Robben Ford's speakers like some of the other Boards out there!  Good laughs, good info and some KILLER PLAYAS!

+1, 2204/2203 with EL34's is hard to beat. I don't like 6550's at all. Every Marshall I've ever had with them lasted about 1 hour before they got changed over.

I would try a Vintage Modern, believe me it's awesome, but takes some time to dial in right.

I've owned both and disagree for what I like. I much prefer the JSX over the XXX.

While I do dig my JSX a ton, I don't think it gives you the huge punch in the chest like an older Marshall. Kind of depends what you're looking for.

for the prices of some of those amps you can get something cheap like a JCM2000 and have it modded to your liking.

i agree 100%. i dislike the XXX model. and it was actually peavey's sponsor-take for lynch back in the day. the buzz is annoying, but its something the JSX doesnt have.

imho, i wouldnt mind owning a JSX at all for a live rig. the ones i have played sounded absolutely sick dimed

as far as a recommendation goes get the 2204 with El34's. you cant go wrong there at all. marshall crunch all the way

If a single channel is fine, maybe try a Laney GH100(or 50)L.
You can slap EL34`s in them, and they are quite nice. They`re not expensive, though, so if you have cash to spare, there probably are better alternatives :)

A 2204 w/ 6550's would sound great w/ a VH4.

But, I've always liked the sound and feel of the Marshalls w/ 6550's.

Metro 100 watt Plexi.

Blankenship Variplex.

Some sort of Mojave.

There are a lot of options, just have to shop around.

Lots of good ideas in this thread.

The JSX and Vintage Modern are both pretty sweet amps.

Have you considered going to the Egnater seminar?

It's a killer, marshally amp.

Have you considered the JCM900? A lot of hate for that amp, but I think it's very VERY underrated.
