Which Marshall-ish amp to get?

agreed. the SLX model is like a hot rodded JCM800 (extra preamp tube i believe) and the slash model is pretty much the jubilee.

Hi guys, thanks for all the thoughts- from the posts it looks like the Marshall 2204 and the Peavy JSX are the main choices of the four amps I listed. Part of the reason I indicated using 6550s in the 2204 was because I know that's what Zakk uses in his 2203, and his tone on "Perry Mason" is one of my all-time favourite tunes and one of my primary benchmarks. However, I also love Van Halen's tone on "Ain't talking about love" and "Panama," and that's using EL34s. Any further suggestions?

Right now I'm kind of leaning towards the JSX because it has an FX loop for my BBE Sonic Stomp and BOSS Delay, and I don't think the 2204 has one...but as one post mentioned, the Marshall hits you in the chest and IS a Marshall, rather than a knock off (albeit a good one!)....

Thanks again!

If you are into that Van Halen tone then a Metro/Blankenship will get you that tone in spades. Just a thought, don't eliminate amps just because they are not big names.

Metro, Ceriatone, Budda.

Maybe look into ordering a Ceriatone amp and have them put a loop in it for you.

My JSX loves having the BBE Sonic Stomp in it's loop. With the Low Contour on 6 and Process on 4 it really gives the amp that kick in the chest tight, thick crunch.

nick at ceriatone builds some sick amps. excellent build quality and price to match. alot of guys order ceriatone front plates and such for their metro amps because they look so much better/authentic than georges.

ceriatone is what im gonna use as my basis for destruction. =P

if anything you cant go wrong with the JSX as far as plug and go. plus, its got so many options for other tones as well. like i mentioned i sure the hell wouldnt mind owning one! =]

....then again i still want jugger's LB

JSX?

Buy a 2203 reissue if you need a loop and classic Marshall.

well the reason he posted this topic was b/c he lost a bid to a 2203 in the first place =0

and its either JSX with EL34's or 2204, but he said he wanted a loop.

so hence ceriatone suggestions to save cash if he still desired the 2204 =]

JSX ≠ what I'd call "classic crunch."

according to D-rock its a nice thick crunch runnin a BBE in the mix. i dont know though i've never messed with a JSX running anything other than 6L6GC's. i was suggesting a 2204 at first and a ceriatone kit built by nick if he wanted a loop

Why can't he bid on another? I have seen some 2203 RIs go for less than 1K recently. The volume difference between a 2203 and 2204 is slight at best. If he wants a classic marshall tone with a loop and needs a useable MV the 2203 RI is the clear choice. I have heard some good things about the ceriatones but I haven't played one, maybe that is a good option too.

The JSX doesn't sound like a classic marshall no matter what you put in the loop. It doesn't have the Marshall sound, I would use a jcm900 before a jsx if I was going for the Marshall sound.

if he wanted to bid on another, he wouldn't have started this topic now would he? :D

I didn't mean to imply that having a BBE SS in the loop of the JSX gives you that "classic Marshall crunch". Someone above had mentioned they coundn't get that "kick you in the chest" kind of crunch with a JSX. Using the ultra channel with a BBE SS in the loop gives me that kind of chest caving crunch, but I use this channel for modern metal tones only.
For "classic Marshall crunch" tones, I rely on the JSX's crunch channel, which covers that territory great.

Copperhead, you may not work directly for Krank but you must be an independent salesperson/get commissions for selling their products, because you push them something fierce.

If you wind up wanting a JSX let me know. I've been tossing around the idea of letting mine go.

Sears! I work for Sears!

........and I did not know that providing a link to sound clips of an amp that was the original Krank design, that many have probably never heard of, was "pushing".......

Tony Dow, (Tony Krank) was, and still is for friends, a Marshall amp modder, his mods got real popular so he started his own amp company. The Chadwick is Tony's take on what a modded Marshall should be, it's a real neat 50w amp. It was the first model produced by Krank, and is still in production. If you're a Marshall guy and get a chance to mess around with a Chadwick, I'm sure you'll like it.

That's not pushing, that's information for the guy who asked what is out there for "Marshall-ish" kind of amps......
