The thing is, everyone is still doing this, but the pedals have changed. Maybe there is a better sweet spot dependent on pedal?

If you do set drive pedal Drive controls to zero, then you’re really only using the pedal for its boosting and built-in low cut capabilities.

Might as well use an EQ pedal which will give you a much greater degree of control over exactly what frequencies are boosted / cut and by how much.

The boutique clones I've used lately, I definitely dial differently. I've generally settled on a bunch of drives I like in front to boost amps, that I've used for years. I've recently been swapping them out for boutique clones like Wayne's stuff(Griffin Analog), and Poison Noises stuff who is local to me. There is way more output then I'm used to, so the levels aren't cranked, and the drive is usable way farther up the dial for me. I can even get carried away with driving it too hard, and making the amp sound more like the pedal, lol. They also seem to let way more lows and highs through, so it takes some dialing at first. Noise levels are WAY lower. Quality components and layout make a big difference in these pedals from my experience.

For sure. I definitely need to adjust when using my Xotic stuff. But I guess for the TS and SD stuff it’s pretty sensible.

The BB preamp has been a staple on my board for years, along with the EP and Comp pedals. I had the AC and RC on my board for years as well. I love their stuff. Wayne has a build of the BB, so I'm real curious to check it out.

It made perfect sense as a starting point when all we had were SD1 & tubescreamers.

Frank Marino did some wacky things with boosts and preamp waaaaaay before many folks
