I had the Competition. It was to bright and stiff for me. I've watched the vids and spoke to a few poeple about the new Splawn Nitro. Supposedly it's darker and more saturated. Might be more in line with what I'm looking for. Who here has played the Nitro? Thoughts?

He e-mailed me. I'm kinda gun shy of Splawns because I didn't mesh with the Comp but it suounds like the Nitro might have the differences that I wanted.

If I can give my 0.02. Im highly skeptical and I would have to try it for myself.

I've owned one for about three months now. I've never played the Comp and have only heard a few seconds of it in a vid clip but from what I hear I can confirm that it's darker. It can be lightened up a bit but it's overall a pretty dark amp.

More saturated than the Comp? Again I've never messed with a Comp so I can't say for sure, but I would imagine so. It's got plenty of gain but doesn't get overly compressed.

If you have any other questions just ask.

in any event...

it voiced darker and has a more modern character to it...more focussed on the low mids and low end...more saturated than any other amp scott's put out to date...still got that splawn thing going on though....still articulate and angry.....

I know a few people who have Quick Rods (not unlike your old competition) AND the Nitro and feel they're different enough beasts where it's not redundant to have both...I'm inclined to agree....

lol.....

LOL..well it just said it was an email from a normal name....I don't know ygzaklynch's real name so I didn't know....lol....I get emails all the time from people about these things so I usually assume if they're emailing me it's someone I don't talk to on the boards...

I actually dig most of the Splawn voicings. I want a one channel Splawn that has tons of gain on tap that can all be rolled off with the guitar volume and still retain a fat clean, almost like a Trainwreck. But with an effects loop. Too much to ask? Probably. But it would be pretty sweet.

Superstock!
although it does have a clean channel, it's got only three gain stages (heheh..only) as opposed to the four his other amps have....and it's a bit more vintagy and open sounding....

sounds like my original "pre-gears" PRO MOD with MM trannys

kinda like the Jimi Hendrix Experience on Steriods

Thank You Mr Splawn !

This sounds odd to me  My QR is not bright at all, I actually took out the jj in v1 and put a Tung Sol in it to get it a little 'crispy-er' so to speak. Stiff? Yeah maybe...it definately isn't the most forgiving amp.

I did have the brightness issue when I retubed my amp and had the bias off just a tad...I would'nt of believed it, but from 35ma to 30ma was a huge difference. After seeing your clips and your style I figured a QR was the perfect match for you.

What cab were you using?

hey man i own both a nitro and a QR. the competition is supposed to be very similar to the QR in terms of voicings. i would say that the nitro and QR are two very different amps. the nitro is a noticabely darker voiced amp. i would not call it a bright amp at all. it's got a lot of low mids, where as the QR has more upper mids. the nitro is a bit saggier but it's still very tight and responsive. i actually think i may favor leads more on the nitro just b/c it's a bit more liquidy in it the feel.

if you look in my sig there's a link to nitro/qr/speaker comparison page where you can get a general idea of the voicings b/t the two amps. the QR's bass was up around 3:00 where as the nitro's was no higher than noon. again the nitro has a darker voicing, more low end/low mids, a bit more saturated. let me know if you got anymore questions!

Mine isn't bright either... Maybe it's my cab... 4x12 with RI GB's...

I now have a greenback loaded Marshall 4X12. Back then I had a Bogner Uberkab. I took the Competition over the Mike's aka ratter and we blasted it through his Marshall 4x12 with 25 watt black backs I think and it was still to bright, even with the treble and presence rolled off.

Then it's gotta be different than the QR voicing-wise. My QR is anything but bright. Yeah you can dial it in very bright, but with everything at noon it's not bright. It's got a very punchy articulate attack. But it's not bright. As a matter of fact, I'm on 2nd gear right now and my bass is on 9:00 and it's thick as anything.
