I can't play well at all with a pick that bends.

same here thats why I went metal (0.3mm) they don't flex at all

dava jazz.. for you guys who like the Dunlop jazz picks, give them a try.. plus the nylon ones glow under stage lights

Eric Johnson Jazz III. Would love to try a comparable Red Bear pick (Jazzer I believe)...anyone try one of these?

Just like guitars, amps, cabs, etc., there is no "best." Everyone is just going to tell you what they use which is what they think is the best.

I'm not going to say they're the best in general, but for me I've stuck with V-picks for years, but have recently moved to Gravity Picks Sunrise & Striker models as I prefer G-Picks unfinished, uh finish, more than V-Picks. Another pick I mess around with every one in a while are my Epic Grips. They're titanium so they're super stiff and super loud compared to any other pick I've used.

Dunlop... the jazz 3 picks are great. It's hard to go back to anything else. I have the max grip ones and some Eric Johnson ones and both are great.
Agreed. I usually use the Eric Johnson jazz 3's, but I just picked up the John Petrucci ones and so far I like them.
Ive been using the JPs for a couple of years now. I'd love to use Stubbies/V-Picks/Gravity, but I cant stand the chirp.

There was a thread about picks about a month ago.
I too had the same question. :)

One recommendation was to get these round "point-less" picks.
Well I did, and they are indeed pointless.
They suck. The reason is because of the indentation right in the center of the round/disc pick.
There is not good way to hold the darn thing and forget about getting pinch harmonics cause you can't slight the pick into a good position to get a bit of finger meat by which to pinch the string.

Someone also pointed me towards faux tortoise shell picks.
Very pricey but the description and reviews sound really promising.
Do a search for that thread and the info will be in there if you're interested in getting the most expensive pick you've every bought, but they claim to last a very very long time, so that somewhat offsets the cost.

*Responding to bolded/italic section*

You must be using some really fucked up pick. I use rounded tips on my picks exclusively. I can't use sharp tips because even though I basically pick exactly like Paul Gilbert, they drag and they slow me down causing me to be inaccurate. They grip like any other pick, well, almost because I get my Gravity picks with the center cutout for better grip.

I tend toward the .88 green Dunlop as well. Good picks for less than a quarter per. Although, after a few plays, they can get slick and difficult to hang on to.

These, but I cut Xs into them for grip

Dunlop 88 gray nylon with grippy shit on them, forget the real name. 73's I use sometimes. Recently tried herco pics made by Dunlop that were cool.

I used the Purple Dunlop Tortex 1.14mm for years. I then tried the Ultex Sharp version which I love for rhythm playing. For the lead stuff I have been using the Ultex Jazz III's and love them.

I've used Big Stubby 1.0mm picks for years, but I've just bought some 5mm thick Perspex to make a drop-type pick like the Hufschmid picks, just to see how I like them. The other day I made one out of 3mm plastic and I do quite like it - the sharp edges make it sound really aggressive! I'll report back once I've made this one.

Used a Jim Dunlap Stubby 2.0mm for probably 15 years, recently switched over to using a Blue Chip Jazz 60.

Score them with a knife . Do NOT hold them in place with your hand when scoring them .

Hold in place with pliers a fork, etc.

Do NOT hold them down with your hand.

Make nice little lines, not too deep, criss cross etc.

I like dunlop ultex 1.00 a lot. The attack feels great. I also dig ibanez steve vai sig picks. Have used those for a while.
