Why did Coverdale not want Sykes in Whitesnake? Do the math. No longer was the lead singer the only visual focal point. Look at this pic of Coverdale surrounded by dudes that weren't ever going to steal his chick.

Now look at this next pic. Uh oh. One of those backup musicians is not like the others.

I still remember my girlfriend (now my wife) in the late 80's seeing an old Whitesnake video for "Slide It In" and seeing Sykes around the 40 second mark and shrieking, "WHO IS THAT?!!!!!" I told her that was John Sykes and that he was a bad ass and was now in Blue Murder. She said, "He looks like he could be Rachel Hunter's twin brother". She never complained when we went to see Blue Murder or Sykes solo ever. :)

I really like that first incarnation of Whitesnake , really good classic rock . Live In The Heart Of The City is great

:D great post! That old band of his sure did look like a ragged bunch. I always thought he popped out a lot in front of his old band. Almost like coverdale was too cool to be there. Maybe there was a reason for that.

End thread, Norum was the guy that should have played in Vai's place, he ripped/rips it up something fierce!

I did like Vai's solo and work on this song though ( and that is saying a lot because I am not a huge fan of his)

Also, despite not liking his solos I have sometimes quite enjoyed his rythm style. He has some swagger to his playing and judgement day sounds a lot like his rhythm style. Love that one.... Dislike his solos in it.

Wow, really. Do we need to have this discussion again?
Coverdale was a star before Sykes and after. Unless your EVH no one cares about a guitar player at a concert or on the radio.

Musicians are funny.

Coverdale's popularity peaked during the Sykes era. His material wasn't even close to as strong, interesting, etc after Sykes left.

Rock stars are funny.

"Judgement Day" was the gem of that album for me.

And yeah... Norum's a monster. I have all of his solo albums and there is plenty of kickass material there.

They should of brought in Yngwie for a laugh, they'd of been some great drama there

There's NO way that Coverdale would have brought in a guy of Yngwie's superstar stature at the time. I was amazed when Joe Lynn Turner joined-up with him for Oddyssey. That didn't last long of course.

If yngwie had played on that album, there would not have been any lyrics for the most part.... There would have been a shit load of harmonic minor though! Dweedle doodle daddle doop..... dUH!!! Now that would seriously be out of context playing!

It would of made for a good studio documentary haha! They could of even brought in the Johanson brothers on keys and drums to cause even more mayhem haha

I can just see a slow groove like Judgement Day and all of a sudden a pedaltone lick three times the speed darting across the sonic space even before the first word comes out of Coverdale's mouth.
