Who wants to listen to a Wizard and shit on my tone?

Dang both sound awesome, do you have an opinion on which wizard amp offers more gain/heavier tones than the W800? Would love to hear it if you’d consider sharing

For Wizards...both the MC2 and MTL models will have more gain/heavier bottom end compared to the W800. A W800 with KT88s will have a little more beef though, but won't have the gain without boosting.

For boosting a W800, I use 3 different pedals...Suhr Koko Boost, Seymour Duncan 805 (these two are permanent) and currently messing with a Highwind Direwolf. The Koko is by far my favorite. The 2 button model, not the reloaded model.

Here's a short video of my W800 KT88 model I used to own. I'm using a Digitech drop to get it to B. Boosted with a Koko. It was a killer amp, but I find I like the el34 model better. I was the original owner of your amp BTW. Currently I have a 50w el34 that I like a lot.

Sounds good man.

What are you particularly referring to that
I need to shit on?
Donald Trumps head?
RODGER THAT!!

Honestly, I thought in the intro that was “ Herb”
from Primus and you were going to bust into
some “ Too Many Puppies”.

Sounds nice & thick,
-I was waiting for you to open up a can of whoop ass man!!

Nary a man can open a can of whoop ass like ol LerLalonde…except maybe Harold of the Rocks :salute:

I’m no good at programming drums, takes to long so just have to go with the preset grooves in SD3 hahaha

Wow that sounds killer and you’re right, I was told you used to own this one!

You’re in the perfect position to help me out, especially with all the wizards you’ve owned…if I want to get into Zakk Wylde JCM 800 territory, is that just as simple as hitting the front with the right pedal?

What side of the Koko are you using - mid boost or normal? That sounds killer!!
Just got this amp (Wizard W800) from @Smashedguitaris⸸ and am learning my way around it

Honestly it’s so outta my usual compressed gainy amp playground, I’m struggling with it (I know I know first world problems)

Spent some hours this evening messing with IRs and landed on a Mesa and a George Lynch cab (dual tracked)

Ibanez j custom tuned half step down into the high input of the W800 into a Torpedo Captor X…let the shenanigans commence

Sounds great here to me.. little more gain from a boost and you will be cookin'.

Thank you but I just want you to know that I will never sound as good as those multi-colored JH1’s you own (all 15 of them)…that picture is seared into my brain and I’ll probably be telling that story after I get dementia at the senior citizen center

If you want, I could make you 15 colored Wizard amps. 😄

Agreed. I would have switched the galloping part and the doom part around (just to pull people in and keep them). Better than I could do though.

Congrats on your amp. HNWD

You know I was thinking the same thing but I have my little riff repository that I throw stuff into daily and eventually a few things sort of match up so I just mixed those three separate parts up lol but I appreciate you listening all the way through!!!

don’t play with my heart.

Thanks. Yeah. Just put a nice OD pedal out front and that will get you there.

I really only use the mid boost side of the koko.

I went back and looked a my notes on that video to be sure it was the koko and I didn't not a boost in the description so now I'm not sure if I even was boosting in that clip. I typically do use a boost when I'm using that low of a tuning though... so it was either a Koko or my SD 805. The 805 is a pretty killer pedal too.

Any pedal recommendations? I tried the buxom boost but it almost sounded like it was sucking tone away
OD1X for me, when I had a MC100. Keeps the tone 'big' vs the typical narrowing that a TS type will do(leaving the lows intact also). But, I had to leave the pull boost off as it didn't mesh as well with it engaged..so it was more like a regular 2203 before boosting. Using the boost pedal added some 'grease' to it and added the right amount of compression in.

Definitely. I don't use the boost on the amp when I use an external boost either.

No --Buy the Zakk wylde JCM800 !! LOL !! It's probably waaaay cheaper also !

The mid side was the only side I ever really used as well. I should get my hands on an 805 because I've heard nothing but good things about it. I have an SD1 and an OD808 as well which sound good when boosting my MC25 for other things.

@RaceU4her @MadAsAHatter completely agree on the more gain part, it’s one of the reasons I feel like I’ve struggled with the amp. That clip had preamp at 8, master at 2 and the highest gain setting switched on. I’ve never played a JCM800 so don’t know how “gainy” they are. It took some work with IRs and really smacking the strings to get some heavy sounding stuff out of the amp.

i dont know if its a gain thing, sounds like there is enough there, wizards just dont have that top end sparkle or upper mid kerrang marshalls have in this and most clips ive heard, its just kind of flat eq wise. i see people saying how angry and grindy this sounds and i just dont understand, its the complete opposite to my ears. just boost the fucker like henson does, he gets the best wizard tones ive heard

I think you will get where you want with a boost in front. It does react differently than the onboard boost, that while it adds a bit of gain, doesn't really compress or saturate. Without the onboard boost engaged, gain wise it is pretty well on par with the 2203's I have owned (albeit tighter and more immediate), so an external boost will react with it in a similar fashion.

@mhenson42 would be better answering this, but a MTL model may be up your alley, as it does have an onboard saturation control. How that effects the feel/gain structure I don't know, as I have yet to play that model. The MCII I played, while having more gain and low end with less upper mid grid than the w800, had a very similar feel, if that makes sense.

The w800 has all the upper mid kerrang of any Marshall I have played or owned....including my old man's '71 plexi. Not a flat sounding eq by any means.

It does make sense and I appreciate you sharing the thought! Wish it was a little easier to track down wizard amps to try em out but that’s the world we’ve been given
