i find lighter backgrounds with dark writing easier to read than vice-versa. I have no problem with there being the option, of course. I voted "no", because i wouldn't use it myself.

Yes, that's it. Is the size causing you a problem? It auto-resizes on my system depending on how my browser is set, but perhaps your resolution is such that it's an issue?

But the red text on the dark background burns...it burns us.

oh you can click on it. I thought it was going to be like 2x3 inches. that would be way to small.

But my LCD monitor looks great with other sites.
The white here is really bright I find.
