Why are scooped mids and high gain "evil, satanic, tough, etc."?

I was listening to Lick it Up, Fits Like a Glove. During Gene's scream, my 78 yo grandmother paused for a moment and asked carefully if his throat was sore.

You’re right. I am the one with the dirty mind. I should have known better with the wow face.

Monkey Man on the other hand wasn’t doing a wow face. He was doing what he thought grandma was doing to get a sore throat.
