Why was Randy Rhoads' tone so crap?

IIRC, Scholz took several years to record the first Boston album. Dude obsessed over it for a long time. Blizzard, on the other hand, sounds like it was recorded in a cardboard box. It sounds more like a demo, honestly. I assume budget and time constraints were primary issues. It’s crazy that one of the best heavy rock albums of all time sounds so...flat. It’s a testament to the strength of the songs and the performances.

Don Arden asks Tommy Aldridge to re-record Lee's drum tracks before the albums were ever released.

Every release of the first Ozzy albums sounds somewhat different. I have 6 different releases of Blizzard, Original vinyl, UK vinyl, US CD, Japan vinyl and finally the 30th anniversary set and mp3 - flac rips of each.
Each one sounds somewhat different, very much a remaster level difference in several instances. My personal favorite is the Japanese release.
Tone wise Randy was pushing the gain levels available at the time and his tone was very much at the leading edge. It took several more years for guitarists to become more competent at higher gain settings.
Many have compared Eddie's recorded sounds as an indictment of Randys lack of tone. My only addition is; can you imagine hearing "Crowley" with Eddie's brown sound vs his gainier tone.

I'd still like to know how the first Boston record sounds sooo incredible even after all these years?

Lots of Eventide H910.
