Since saturday my Herbert has 12 new tubes. All changed by Peter himself. A friend and me vesited him in Bad Steben.

I don´t know if there is any amp as perfect as Herbert now. Wow! Herbert has now everything a superb amp has to have.
V1 and V2 are these new Preamp tubes. :D

Nothing more to say!

I´ve got a new FLV30, too since saturday.

Just to chime in....
Never thought just 6L6s in the Herbert sounded good.

I do have a Splawn cab with Eminence speakers in it. Totally different animal with the Herbert. Dont like the Eminences with the Herbie IMO. I know mine with the Diezel cab will cut thru a garbage truck across the block if need be. I would try a different cab. The Diezel cabs are SWEET!! Cant go wrong.

The solution to your problem is switching to a VH4. I started with a Herbert also, and had the same problem, even with a front loaded cab.

Try this: Channel 2

Gain: 2:00 o'clock
Volume: noon
Treb: 3:00-ish
Mids: 2:00-4:00
Bass: 2:00

Mid cut off

Presence: about 2:30-3:00
Deep: 2:00

Is it a new Herbert? Peter up'd the presence on the newer ones, it was done to mine as well before I sold it. I didn't sell it because it didn't cut, I wanted the mid gain tone on the VH4, wish I still had channel two along with all the VH4 channels. You may need to have it updated, they cut like a knife after that. I never had a problem before though.

I really think the problems lies in the cab...way too dark for a dark-voiced amp...
The Herbert is awesome, but not with every cab...

The thing that really strikes me is that all of your settings have waaaaay to much gain on ch3 IMO!
So much gain just kills the tone I think, and it compresses the amp so maybe that´s why you don´t cut? I would back down on the intensity on the midcut aswell. I set the gain on 10-11 o'clock and the midcut never past 10 o'clock.

Happy hunting!

i dont buy that, gain at 1 or 2 aint a lot,, i use ch 3 for leads so yes i put more gain on it.Like i said i might load one of my cabs with v30's n seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

i dunno, bout the gain being the culprit. i use gain at about 2:00 on ch 3 for leads. i dont have problems cutting through a dense mix.

I have to agree w. Andy. I run my gain around 1 or 2 oclock on the lead channel.. and even on Ch2....and it will cut my singer down @ the legs... and cut thru the mix also. i seriously believe the cabinet is the issue. Or the speakers. The V30 change should make a big difference. I think the Legends are holding the tone back.

I don´t play solo´s at all, use all channels for rythm playing. Try lowering your gain settings and I promise you it will open up more and the tone will be even more clear.

I have the same problem when playing with the band on saturday. It is'nt always about eq. an amp. I dont have the energy to bring my engl cab, so i use a cab thats there. Its a marshall cab, even with my engl se i have trouble cutting at times(some freq.) I play with my little brother and he has a powerball. He also uses the marshall cabs they have there. It might look strange at first when a powerball sits better in the mix than a se and herbert. I know for 100% its the cabs, not only the speaker u use.

I used to have a framus v30 cab (damn cheap) the difference between the engl and the framus cab was fenomenal. Not that the framus was bad, i actally liked it and will buy one in time. It collered the tone in a good way, it sounded more vintage. Same speakers. The construction of the framus and the engl where different and it made a huge difference in tone.

But first ill try to save for the new diezel cabs.

Don´t want to sell You a Diezel cab but the guys
are completely right. The construction is maybe
more important than the speaker.

..Like the voice of God...Peter speaks!  Hope all is well Herr Diezel!!! Loving the cabinet!!!

As I read this, I feel it is a cabinet issue. Several of us here play various styles with much gain and do fine. It is a cabinet issue, not a tube issue, or string issue ;) If the cabinet can not handle the amp, you are done. The Mills will be a bit boomy with Herbert.

after reading and experimenting with the three cabs I have access to at my practice space, It makes a huge difference in the tone/cut area. The marshall 1960 doesnt sound very awesome, the Bogner ecstasy I have there sounds AMAZING, and the Emperor 4x12 sounds pretty bad ass, not as good as the Ecstasy, Ive also run it through an orange 2x12, sounds great but very directional in terms of the tonal output.
