This was the Wizard you sold me man, lol, it's the C version tranny. Only thing that's changed is I put in different preamp and power tubes in it. That clip was boosted though too, I use an Xotic BB Preamp OD. Thinking of another? BTW, I didn't forget, you have first dibs if I ever decide to get rid of it.

Hello, suicide hotline?

I have a whole bunch of NOS RFT 12ax7's laying around but I don't think I ever thought to try them in the Wizard when I had it.

What's the deal with the BB Preamp? The Wizard certainly doesn't need more gain. Is it a feel thing?

yeah, mostly a feel and saturation thing. I keep the gain a little over noon, and hit the front end with the BB setup as a clean boost. Gives it some nice teeth but the gain stays very articulate and clear, I've loved that pedal with every amp actually. It just seems to work REALLY well with the Wizard.

and those RFT love the Wizard. They darken it up a bit, and really bring out that complex gain structure. I love those things for high gain applications.

I hear the Mills cab SO MUCH in this clip. It has that open-ness under the mic.

This is an extremely well done tone. One of the best I've heard from a non-pro studio in a very long time.

Stop being so modest, you're a great player

haha, thanks brother, really appreciate that. You're a kickass player yourself man, I loved your clip. And yeah, the Mills have spoiled me rotten for cabs, just about anything I've put thru them sounds great. Even amps that don't usually play well with V30 seem to get along with the V30 Mills for some reason. I've yet to try this amp thru my V30 x K100 cab, but I'm pretty stoked to give it a rip this week, I really dig that combo for the heavies. Were you using the K100 x V30 mix, or all K100 in your Mills?

Thanks for the kind words, man

I use the V30 x K100 mix. I love having mixed speakers in cabinets. It really allows for plenty of variety when it comes to micing up the sucker

Yep...It is a pretty cool result. Even some of the Amp builders are surprised...

This review illustrates a point that we make continuously....Cabs should be made by CAB designers....not AMP designers. Thanks for all the support guys! Keep those tracks coming.

Sounds amazing better then your Diezels to me. I have the same mics. How did you set them up or do you have a pic of them set up? thanks

thanks man. I had the e906 direct on the cone, and an SM57 at a 45deg angle right next to it closer to the rim. I don't have a pic, but I'm sure there are some online, it's a pretty common mic setup. Thanks for checking it out.

How about the settings on your BB Preamp, man? I just bought one because of this clip

Now the boost family is: Keeley Modded SD-1/Maxon OD 820 Pro/TS 7/BB Preamp :D

haha, nice! congrats man, it will be a nice addition to your collection. I'm a boost junkie too, and I love this pedal. I have it setup like a normal clean boost, OD below 9:00, vol above 2:00, treb and bass set to taste for the specific amp. My buddy LOVES his with the 5150, they work great together.

Thanks for the info!

Also, not to sound like a know-it-all, but most pedals are not used as a clean boosts at all. A clean boost would be ONLY a volume (gain) increase in front of the amp. Any pedal that even remotely colors the sound would just be called a boost. They're not clean considering that they are boosting the midrange and rolling off lows and highs.

I used to call 'em the same thing until someone told me otherwise, so I figure I'd spread the good word.

Again, I listened to your clip and I can legitimately say it is one of the most rip roaring 80's metal tones I've ever heard.

what setting did you have the 906 on flat? when you say direct on the cone do you mean between the cap and cone? and when you say rim do you mean of cap or outer edge of cone?

Thanks

The e906 was directly over the "cap", and the SM57 was over the "cap edge" from your pic. I keep the 57 on whatever side isn't close to an adjacent speaker, and I try to keep the 57 and 906 closer than the distance to the actual cap for phase issues.

thanks man. I do see your point, it's not a pure "clean boost" for sure, lol. I just meant setting it up to drive the front of the amp with a hotter signal, as compared to the pedal itself adding a lot of clipping overdrive. ;)

Kills your VH4 tone
yeah, the Wizard is a killer amp for sure, but the VH4 is no slouch either. It can DEFINITELY sound better than the couple clips I've done, they really don't do it justice at all. :aww:

I don't think the mark of a good amp should be "difficult to record." A good amplifier will sound good when you throw a 57 on the cab and let her rip. Can we get some amp pix as well?
